So and go figure…my latest “Side Project” beer, the Gamma Ray, is the biggest beer in terms of alcohol that has ever come out of the Terrapin Brewery. Not only that, it’s a WHEAT BEER! Brewed with 50% wheat, a handful of Munich malt and 700 lbs of Tupelo and Sourwood honeys from Savannah Bee Company, this beer is sure to make you smile. I hope you enjoy the newest addition to the “Side Project” series of beers. Spike “Gamma Ray” The beer that melts your face off! IBU’s: 40 Malt: 2-row Pale, Munich, Wheat, Carapils Acidulated Hops: Perle, Mt. Hood Praise: Jeff Holland, Creative Loafing, Top 10 Beers I Had This Year: 2. Gamma Ray (Terrapin Beer Company) – Heavenly wheatwine, sweet, spicy, and boozy. “…, Spike hit one out of the park with his wheatwine” This massive wheat beer is brewed with an obscene amount of locally grown Tupelo and Sourwood Honeys from Savannah Bee Co. This Gamma Ray will stop any super hero’s arch enemies in their tracks! The high content alcohol of these beers make them perfect for cellaring…hide them away and pull one out for a special event 2-3 years later. An orange colored beer, with a small, foamy textured off white head. That head has no hangtime and there's no lacing left behind. A banana and spicy nose and tasting. A medium body with decent carboonation and smoothness.

I have enjoyed every Terrapin beer up to this one. It was not that great. The problem with this beer is systemic - namely, it is sticky/tacky, un-refreshing (the exact opposite of what a wheat beer should be), and a tad boozy. This beer was more barleywine and less wheat - I wouldn't buy it again, however, others might love this so in the interest of not shitting on a micro, pick it up if you see it and decide for yourself.

This was offered from a buddy last weekend... I wanted to like it, but the mouthfeel was so thick and the flavor so intensely wheat that it was just borderline undrinkable. As a matter of fact I could only choke down half a bottle. Swing and a miss on this one.
