Hazy dark yellow with solid large white lacing foam head. Aroma is weak, blocked of by foam, caramel and bitter hop. Taste is low sweet bitter beer. Did great with Indonesian dish. (Velp 201206)

Another solid beer from t' IJ. Lighter for a dubbel but still hearty. Pours a muddy brown, small white head. Taste is almondy, little toast and some woodiness. Easy sipping yet flavourful.

Sampled at the Brouwerij 't IJ in Amsterdam. Poured from the tap a cloudy amber-brown with a creamy tan head. A deliciously succulent sour-fruit-toffee aroma, crisp palate, and bitter-burnt caramel-candy flavors with a robust hop bitterness. Finishes long and pronounced - very nice.

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. The beer is quite clear reddish brown when poured, a slight haziness may occur if the sediment is disturbed in the end, decent head. LOVELY aroma with intense fruity an vinous notes, spices are very much present too. The flavour is also fruity and spicy but not very powerful, hints of caramel. Moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness. A slightly salty finish. Light bodied, the ABV is well hidden. Easy drinking. The aftertaste is not remarkable.

Hazy reddish brown with a big beige foam. Yeasty aroma of almond, cardamonn, roasted malt, banana and red berries. mellow yeasty flavour of cream, almond and grass. Smooth aftertaste of yeast and grass.

Hazy brown/dark orange colour, small white head. Aroma barnyardish malts with weak hints of alcohol. Also in this one the aroma comes kind of weak. Flavour of sweet plum, alcohol and some "ginsengic" notes. (reminds of La Swaf!’s in a way).

Deep, fairly clear ruby-mahagony catches the light nicely, and the cream-colored foam that sits atop the beer lasts nicely. The aroma is full of overripe fruits and more fruit that was caramelized (kind of like a brown sugar and fruit sauce). There’s a bit of a floral (roses and honeysuckle) nature underneath the heavy fruits. The flavor is less exciting than the aroma, but still comes up with a nice supporting caramel flavor to back up what the nose picked up. A lingering bit of bananas foster in the finish leaves you with a pleasant memory of the beer. Brandon (wunderbier) warned me to leave the yeast in the bottle as it’s a very potent strain, and I have to agree with him, without the yeast, this is a very underrated beer from an underrated brewery.

Tom Nickles (of San Diego's O'Brien's fame) has been getting in quite an interesting array of obscure beers as of late -- including quite a few from France and The Netherlands. Of note has been the several varieties of beer available from this particular brewery, which my bud Darren has spoken highly of in the past. And while I wouldn't say that this 6.5%ABV Dubbel made for the very best first impression of the Brouwerij 't IJ (IMO), it was still interesting enough for a change of pace.
33cL brown bottle, with the 't IJ signature diamond-shaped label featuring an ostrich (or is that an emu?). Poured decently enough, though this seemed to have a little more yeasty dregs that what I normally expect from a smaller bottle.
Had to wait a while for this bottle to warm up a bit, before the aroma came into it's own. Hints of subtle fruitiness, with perhaps a touch more woodsy-ness that I would normally have predicted with this sort of beer. Interesting.
The same can be said with the flavor profile. In fact, perhaps it wouldn't be too far-afiled to say that this has an almost cherrywood-ish character to it (i.e. fruit + wood); maybe?
Not really all that complex, but interesting enough to warrant further investigation. I suspect that this is probably more interesting on tap -- a journey to Amsterdam that I wouldn't mind taking!:)
In the meantime, this isn't bad from the bottle....

A dark brown appearance with a large head. This one was bent a little more sour than most dubbles Ive had. The main flavor going on here is chocolate followed by some raisins and nutmeg. There is some citrus detectable in the aftertaste. A good one!
