It’s been said, “It’s easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer.” And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. “Surly’s a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers,” and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day, it’s just a beer. If you like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanboys grab it.

16 oz can, canned on 9/8/16. A bit of a gusher. Pours slightly hazy copper gold with a big rocky white head that retains fairly well and laces the glass a little.
The aroma is subdued - sweet perfumey biscuity malt and grassy hops.
The flavor is sweet biscuity malt with some fruit and grassy resiny bitter hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly watery.
Overall, an OK IPA. -

A lightly copper tinted brass body when poured out of the can. The dense head is is a pale khaki. A bright citrus grapefruit nose is complemented with almonds and sweet marmalade. There is also an obvious caramel note. Flavors of grapefruit rinds and toasted almonds make for a fairly sweet beer. A nice toasted sweet bread taste is flavored throughout each drink with dominant citrus. This is pretty tasty.

Canned on 5/6/2014. Pours a cloudy golden amber color with a small off-white head. Lots of floaties (not a problem with me). Sweet citrus aromas with grapefruit, tangerine, mango, sweet malts and fresh pine cones. Grapefruit, lemon, resiny pine and sweet malts on the tongue. Finishes dry and bitter. Mouthfeel is a touch above medium. A great take on West Coast IPA's, although I've had better beers in the style. But extra points for the brewer's comments on the can. Sort of an eff you to the critics of their other beers. Big fan of Surly. Good stuff.

Hazy mid yellow/ orange tinged body, thin head. Dry, muted smell - hop smell doesn't come through strong in the nose, but what does is nice. Flavor of grass and pine hops that linger on the tongue. Alcohol content is middle of the road - not overpowering, decent bitter finish.

Another great IPA from Surly but not nearly as good as Furious. Tons of citrusy hops in the aroma with a nice bitter taste. Could use a bit more body. Enjoyable but I would rather spend an extra buck on a 4-pack of Furious.

Not sure why they felt the need to make this with Furious and Abrasive in the line up. This is a very pale version with a big nose but a real light flavor. No real punch to this but it has a decent amount of hops I guess. Decent but not their best.

Pours a very clear light amber with a 3 finger white head that disappears quickly. Decent amount of carbonation in this one. Aroma is very hoppy and slightly sweet. Taste is slightly hopped with hints of malts and dryness. Aftertaste is malty and dry. Pretty much a hopped pale ale and not much of an IPA but it is good.
