The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle. 11.0% abv • 195º L • Imperial Chocolate Stout • 22 oz / 1/6 keg 2-row barley / caramel 60 malt / barley flakes / chocolate malt / bittersweet Belgian chocolate / kettle hops: chinook & willamette Editor's note: The 2010 vintage (and possibly future vintages) has a lower ABV and may vary with the seasonal release of this beer from year to year. Southern Tier also has released for the Canadian market a billingual label on the bottle. All ratings for the various ABV/label versions should be captured here.

Chocolate.... I don't know how they got that much chocolate aroma and flavor without it being overpowering. It's deep and rich and without a doubt substantial, yet tempered enough to make it enjoyable. Beautiful.

This one lives up to the Choklat hype. Like a Youngs Double Chocolate Stout....but stronger! Flavor of heavy chocolate malt, coffee, etc...the full package. I wanted to drink half of this and save the rest for an ice-cream beer float tomorrow....but just couldn't do it. Got a nice buzz though and ready for bed. An IPS that I would get again....hopefully for sharing next time around.

One of my wife's favorite stouts - thin black pour with a beautiful walnut hued head. Dark, bitter chocolate aromas with hints of licorice and anise. Medium bodied lends well to the massive chocolate taste. This is a liquid candy bar, and a tasty one.

I LOVED this beer! I truly thought I died and was swimming with my mouth open in chocolate beer heaven! Every sip was such a pleasure! The color was as rich as the taste of dark chocolate. It tasted like this beer had five levels of flavor depth: dark chocolate, milk chocolate, Hershey's chocolate, Godiva chocolate and cocoa. This would truly make the list of my last rights wishes!

    22oz bottle -

If Willy Wonka were a beer geek, this would probably be his beer I imagine. Hard to think that a brewer could fit this much chocolate aroma/flavor into a beer and not make it a train wreck, but Southern Tier nails it (again). A rich, decadent aroma of chocolate. Just pure, unadulterated chocolate. Flavor...more chocolate...dark chocolate, combined with a heavy dose of Capt. Black's pipe tobacco (vanilla). The roast is noticeable but there as a supporting role for the chocolate (chocolate and coffee are great pairings) and is happy to do so here. My only nitpick was the mouthfeel could have had a fuller feel, maybe more velvety smooth...I wonder if they added oatmeal to this? A world class beer.

After enjoying Boulevard's chocolate ale so much, I didn't expect to find a chocolate beer that was even better but I was proved wrong with Choklat. Wonderful dark chocolate candy bar aroma with a taste that matches. Awesome dessert beer!! My favorite Southern Tier offering by far.

Bottle brought to me by local beer buddy Sam.I.Am. - WISH LIST item! Heavy black pour with an extremely tight near perfect tan head, massive lacing. Chocolate aroma. Chocolate aroma. Chocolate aroma. Taste and aroma are of Dark chocolates, Hershey's Chocolate Syrup, Belgian chocolate, Godiva chocolate liqueur, milk chocolate, cocoa nibs, semi-sweet chocolate, Lindt chocolate, Mayan chocolate. Maybe a little java, but definitely chocolate... and roasted malts. Then there is a bit of chocolate in the end. Imperial Choklat. Yes it is. Willie Wonka had something to do with this beer I'm certain. I never thought I'd hear my wife say, "That's almost too much chocolate!" But it's not.

You want some beer with that chocolate? Quite impressed with this, thought I was drinking a chocolate milk shake until the 10% caught up with me. No false advertising here. Worth picking up again, but I’ll need an occasion. I guess there’s always a Friday night around the corner.

Certainly smells like chocolate, a chocolate malt actually. Looks black in the glass with only a little head that doesnt last. Chocolate syrup, hersheys, flavor with a bitter roast finish. Mouthfeel is very full, maybe a bit too fizzy for an imp.

Pours black black with a low tan head. Aroma and flavor of coffee, dark chocolate, and...more chocolate. All in all I think it's pretty great, very drinkable and fun.
