This beer was discontinued by Hurlimann in 1996. Castle Eggenberg brews all versions from 2000 and later. SAMICHLAUS BIER® is brewed only once a year on 6th December, the day of St. Nicholas (Santa Claus) and is aged for 10 months before bottling. SAMICHLAUS is one of the rarest beer specialities in the world and with 14% alcohol by volume, it is the strongest bottom-fermented beer in the world. SAMICHLAUS may be aged in the bottle for many years to come, as older vintages become more complex with a creamy warming finish. This beer can be served with hardy robust dishes and desserts, particularly with chocolates, or as an after dinner drink by itself.

This brew has a mellow taste which you would not expect from a 14%abv brew. This brew has a great head and is well worth the cost. Yu should try this brew no matter what the cost.

Poured crystal clear with that perfect copper hue. However the head was disappointing. Aroma is classic Barleywine. It’s kinda sweet and malty. The taste is thick and viscous. A sweet malty flavor, fruity and sweet sugar along with some nice hop bitterness biting along the edge of my tongue. I also taste a bit of yeast that gives it just a slight hint of Belgium beer flavor. Really good beer for the ABV. First couple of ounces the alcohol is fairly well hidden. Leaves a sweet malty and fruity aftertaste. Might be a bit on the sweet side. All and all, nice beer.

Pours a dark translucent cola brown with a respectable though effervescent buff head. Aroma has a strong overtone of caramel, rather sweet, but with some woody underpinning. Luscious flavor has a sweet caramel core supporting subtle malty, clove, molasses, and hoppy notes. Sweetness is not cloying, and a snip of hop bitterness brings it down a bit. Firm, viscous texture helps it go down nicely, though fizz leaves a little to be desired. Worth $22 a bottle? I suppose it is.

Smells great but nowt like beer. Looks like shite after 30 seconds. Full mouthfeel and alcohol numbs the gums. Alcohol is dominant in the flavour. This is a big doppelbock with huge dark fruit flavours and sweet caramel malt. Very difficult to rate for me. Could have been above 4, or bellow 3, depending on circumstances.

Pours out a deep clear brown color with a head that instantly disappears. The aroma is of alcohol of heavy sweet contents. The mouthfeel is smooth in spite of the 14 abv. The flavor is very sweet like a Barleywine.

Pours a very thin foamy head but goes away pretty quick. Has a clean dark amber appearance. No lacing whatsoever. Aromas are mainly earthy and herbal hops as well as sweet malts and spices. Strong alcohol presence from the first drink. Flavours are dry type fruits (raisins, plums). Big warming and tingling sensation on the palate. Full bodied mouthfeel. One bottle though, is quite sufficient.

2009 Vintage opened on New Years Day of 2012, I had a previous bottle about a year ago and remembered it quite fondly. This time around I was not as impressed, but still enjoyed this sturdy sipper. Flat pour with no head and a few spots of lacing on a burnt copper colored body. Heavy and sweet with a big thickness and smooth finish. Vinous with lots of licorice, raisin, berries, doughnut and vanilla. Overall it's a bit too thick and sweet for a full sample, this should be shared.

Tasted at a Christmas party, along with a chees plate and good friends...Light gold copper,no head and not much carbonation it tastes a bit like a dessert wine or a Porto if you like...Sweet and no burning despite the high abv14%alc vol, very appreciate for the fruity character and the warm it gives to your palate...Once or twice a year during Holidays i think it's a must!

It pours a dark brown/amber/orange with no head and just a ring of lacing. An aroma of caramelized malts, hops, oranges and light citrus, breads, honey, brown sugar, raisin, and spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of caramel malts, hops, orange and citrus, brown sugar, bread, some honey, raisin, and alcohol and spices. Tasty .. would be great on a cold, winter night..

So I got interested in this beer when finding out it was one of the strongest (if not THE strongest) naturally brewed beer in the world. I found an importer who could deliver this beer to me. Of course I orderd 8 beers and two glasses, because a good beer is never enjoyed alone. So me and my mate sat down yesterday and had a Samichlaus bottled in 2009. Poured in it's glass it looks really inviting. Being amber coloured and with a nice thin foamy head it forced me to have a sip. That was all alcohol. So this was a major disappointment. But, this beer grew on me. It took me about 90 minutes to finish the glass and only the first 10 minutes were really harsh. After that, I got used to the taste and started to recognise raisins, drop (dutch delicassy) and a bit of sirup. The sweetness of the beer really got me into it and I decided that we drank it at the wrong moment. This beer should be drank at room temperature when coming out of a blizzard. Sitting down on the couch and warming up with a Samichlaus. And that rhymes!!

11.2 oz bottle, bottled in 2004. Pours a hazy amber cola with a smallish off-white head that quickly diminishes to a thin collar.

The aroma is sweet figgy malts, cola and molasses. Some wheaty malts, alcohol and spices come out as it warms.

The flavor is sweet sugary malts, dark fruit, nuts, cardboard, and chocolate with a burnt alcohol finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, an interesting beer. The alcohol is apparent but surprisingly not overwhelming for me. It is a bit too cloyingly sweet for me. Would make for a good after dinner sipper. Thanks Solan!
