I defy you to describe this beer. Perhaps through your own insufficient description you will pardon my paltry attempt at putting into words the revolutionary beer that will someday define America's unique Barley Wine style. Chicken Killer is brewed with twice the ingredients of the Santa Fe Brewing Company's other beers, and only half the usual amount of liquid is extracted from these ingredients. This makes one strong beer. At over ten percent alcohol, Chicken Killer is actually as strong as wine, but this is not to say that it is difficult to drink. On the contrary; be careful with this one. The flavors of the beer are at first as overwhelming as the intense Santa Fe sun. But in the same way our sun gives us the unrivaled brilliant colors of Santa Fe, the potency of Chicken Killer gives us the remarkable spectrum of flavors that can be found in no other beer, in no other city. If you did not have the opportunity to try last year's vintage, come try this year's!

Pours clear coppery with a thin buff head. Aroma delivers fruity, woody and toasted malt notes. Flavor nicely echoes the aroma and tosses in a note of honey. Mouthfeel features firm body but not a lot of fizz. Don’t be chicken, "kill" a bottle. With friends.

A shared bomber at a forgotten price, from Total Wine, Scottsdale AZ. An amber-hued pour under a brief, creamy beige head. Malty aroma, maybe some dark fruit as well. Medium bodied. Malty flavour, quite sweet. Not terrific by any means, but worth another try.

Hazy dark copper color with light brown foam head, lacing to glass. Aroma is barley, alcohol and caramel. Taste is quite bitter with alcohol clearly present. Surprising aftertaste, changing from initial sweet to bitter and back again. Have to drink this slowly. (Houston 201301)

low man on the totem pole in a BW tasting. smaller in body than the others, with a hint of metallic aftersmell (is that a word?) and ever so slightly less complexity. a nice beer, but as far as BWs go, below average for my money. decent sweet malt/fruit balance with a hint of hop bitterness.

Bottled@omhper. Hazy deep orangeish amber colour with small slightly off-white head. Aroma is fruits, wood, some herbs as well as spices. Also some mild notes of alcohol. Flavour is fruits, toffee, alcohol, quite strong on the hoppyness as well. Also mild spicyness lurking in it and together with alcohol giving a slight burn in the finish.

Bomber bottle @ McNellie's Pub in Tulsa. Slightly cloudy amber-orange pour with a thin but sustained cream head lacing throughout. Ripe fruits - dates, raisins - caramel, sweet malts, and slight hops in the big aroma. Taste is rich with the sweetness and fruitiness upfront followed by a good dose of hops and well-hidden alcohol. A big, rich and smooth barleywine - nicely done.

Sampled on 4/25/2009. This barley wine pours a medium orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, with decent retention. The aroma is caramel malts and floral hops, a touch sweet. A medium bodied barley wine. The malts are caramel and sweet, a touch fruity. Some orange and orange peel. The hops are earthy. Nice carbonation. This is a big bad barleywine. Lots of sweet malts, balanced by a bunch of earthy hops. Fairly smooth taste. Hides the 10% alcohol very well. Nice sipping barleywine. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Pours orangish-brown with decent clarity and thick, creamy head. The aroma is malty and clean. Flavor is strong and puddled, combining most every flavor trait I can think to name. Not bad, but almost overwhleming to the taste buds. Full bodied and creamy with moderate warming affect.

Sampled from bottle. Pours clear, dark copper with a creamy light-tan head. Mild malt aroma with some spice and dark fruit notes. Not quite as hoppy as I expected for an American B-wine. Sweet flavor and slightly alcoholic. Toast, caramel and prune dominate the flavor. Full-bodied, smooth and warming. Pretty solid beer from the folks in Santa Fe.
