Michael Robinson’s Old Ben Ale is a malty English-style brew boasting notes of dried fruit, nut, and caramel. A slight bitterness balances the combination of five malts in this full bodied beer. Light brown with reddish highlights and good clarity, the ingredients of this English-style brew are all American with the exception of the yeast which is distinctively English. Created to enjoy on cold nights or as an after dinner treat, Mike’s Old Ale is 9% alcohol by volume, about twice that of the average beer. An experienced homebrewer, Mike was recognized as a finalist in the 2008 Samuel Adams LongShot American Homebrew Contest, as well as in the 2007 Samuel Adams® Patriot Homebrew Contest.

sampled on 4/23/10. 12oz bottle with mitch. pours a clear copper/amber color. thin head. aroma is caramel, raisin. taste is caramel, raisin, slightly sweet. warming, but not an alcohol bite/hotness. body is medium. aftertaste is a little sweet. would be interesting to actually age this.

Apr. 2010 - Listed on Boston Beer website as an Old Ale. Beer pours clear amber golden color with huge head that spilled over, even in my slightly oversized glass. Lots of lacing. It sure is pretty. The aroma was that of metallic raisins. The flavor is sweet fruity sugars, a little overly sweet, and yes, some metallic flavors as well.. Not nearly as good as the original Longshot Old Ale winner, imo. Not a great fan of this one.

a fairly straighforward but textbook example of the style. a little warming alcohol on the nose and palate. ripe fruits, sweetish malt and just a touch of hops. well balanced.

12 oz bottle -
Aroma - lots of rasin/empty raisin box aroma, toffee, caramel....the light cardboard-like note actually worked pretty well with this.
Appearance - stunning dark amber body, clear with a dense khaki head.
Taste - dried fruits, leather....medium-heavy dose of sweet caramel malts.
Palate - slight sting from the alcohol bite, but mostly smooth with a full body feel.
Overall - a really nice example of this style. Great price too. -

Amber pour with a creamy white head, plenty of lacing. Sweet aroma of raisins, caramel, malts, and alcohol. Sweetness and alcohol overwhelm any other flavors, especially as the beer warms. Way too sweet for me.

Pours a clear, dark coppery amber with a thick off-white head - rather appetizing. Aroma is strongly spicy, mainly cloves with hints of cinnamon and a malty undertone. Flavor is quite spicy, mainly cinnamon and cloves, with a malty underpinning and a strong hint of honey. Texture is lively, edgy and tingly, leaving a nice fizzy and spicy finish. No wonder this was one of the winners!

Great amber-brown body with a large lasting head and a heavy coat of lace.....this beer looks ideal. Scents of mixed berries, vanilla, caramel and cereal. Full bodied, rich and warm. Malt forward with a big raisin presence. Notes of toffee, floral hops, bread, nuts, berries followed by a shadow of vanilla and wood.

Deep amber body, medium to small head, decent lace. Aroma of caramel malts, dark fruit, and some nuts. Flavor is much the same with a slight hoppiness. Overall a decent old ale, worth a try.

Sampled on 4/23/2010. This old ale pours a medium amber color from a 12oz bottle. Medium to small sized white foamy head with nice lacing and good retention. The aroma is caramel malts, dark fruit and slightly sweet. Medium bodied old ale. The malts are caramel and fruity, slightly sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Nice carbonation. Semi sweet, fruity and slightly nutty, with a hint of orange at the finish. Hides the alcohol very well. A nice sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
