Sampled from bottle. Pours clear dark copper-brown with a lasting off-white head and much lacing. The barrel aging really plays a big part in this beer lending it some sour and vanilla notes. It overwhelms the hazelnut. Always interesting, Rogue.

Tap @ The Saucer, H-TowN .. 2nd beer of JoeyPalooza .. . Pours a murky caramel .. almost no foam .. . pretty damn sour with touches of wet hay and light spiced rum barrel .. . mouth is thin and takes about half the pin to get used to it.. . not all bad but to tart to be enjoyable.. . and no shoes!

A nice deep brown pour with a nice off white head. Lots of lacing around my glass that sticks. Aroma was caramel and nutty. Flavor was spicy with the nuttiness in the background. A decent beer.

A pleasant fairly complex sweet mild flavor brown ale. Just the thing when your out with the boys doing crossword puzzles. Ok, it is a bit expensive, not a lot of ABV jolt, but it is enjoyable.

Some real Rogue hating on this page, but I was acutally thinking the same thing, recently had the double mocha porter, the hazlenut brown, the mogul ale and this, and really think its alot of money for a beer that is really just barely above average. Some nice nut flavours, carmel, toffee, touch of roasting fennel seed, sourdough, bit of a sugarcane/run sweetness that was added, but I really cant see how this beer even remotely benefits from barrel aging. Really too bad, not a good use of 10 bucks.

Yeah....Well, I kinda feel robbed too. I mean, Rogue was one of the first craft brews that I sampled....one of my "gateway" brewers. Now I am so glad that I am trying all these others b/c I do not understand how they can get these prices? This beer is good, not great...definitely not $10 great! Not even sure if this is better than their regular Hazelnut Brown. I like the flavor. I like the mouthfeel. Some different bolder flavors there at the end, but again, I would pass for this price and just get a 22 oz. of the reg Hazelnut, or just a 6-pack of some good brown ale instead. Found a 6-pack of Santa's Reserve on clearance sale for $7.50, but besides something like that, think I am done with Rogue for a while.

first (IMHO) in the john john series that was NOT significantly better than the base beer used. i don't know if rum just isn't the right barrel or what, but this one actually fell short of the hazelnut brown, and at twice the price. wood, vanilla, and some hazelnut (though somehow less than is present in either the brown ale or the rum). too simple and thin bodied for a barreled beer. not bad, but DEFINITELY not worth the price. shouldn't have bothered with this one.

I thought this one might be a variation of their hazelnut ale, of which i am fond of. This one looked like it with the deep brown murky body, the aroma was almost non exsistant with very faint hazelnut notes. Flavor was much the same (as the aroma)very understated, although you can distinguish the rum, and spice. Overall i was not impressed by this one at all especially when comparing it to some of the other john johns out there.
