Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook's signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. It's eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. Redhook ESB is made with a careful blend of two-row Klages and Caramel 60 barley malts and two hop varieties: Willamette and U.S.-grown Tettnang. This rich, copper-colored ale is styled by a complex balance between the bitterness of the hops and the sweetness of a heavier caramel malting. A late addition of hops highlights the fresh aroma. The well-rounded finish of our ESB makes it a wonderful companion to all manner of fowl and is great with grilled meats, game and cheeses.

I picked this beer up from the Kroger on Brambleton in Roanoke, Virginia. It was part of a mixed case. This beer was a nice take on a very favorite style of mine. While it was good, the Brits OWN this style.

pour was a medium amber with a yellow hue and an average sized white head that receded down to a thin layer and small collar of residue with poor lacing. The aroma was rather strong of toasted caramel malts and a mildly sweet yeast with notes of toffee, butterscotch and citrus. The taste was very malty and a slightly sweet with a hint of toffee early on and then had a mild citrus bitterness. The mouthfeel was light in body with a mildly syrupy texture and a lively carbonation.

I was hoping for more. This beer has a thick pour with an aroma of malt and hops. I wouldn't call this an ESB but instead a pale ale hybrid. It's a macrobrew for sure. It's way too hoppy to be called an ESB, IMHO. Thick and foamy mouthfeel. Plenty of hops in the taste. Finish is weak. At least the bottle is cool.

Another bad American variation on a British classic style. A light rust coloured pour with an off-white head. The aroma is weak hops, and caramel malt. The flavour lacks balance, a bit too malty for this style.

Bought at 2am after landing at SeaTac to make the 5 hour drive back to Canada. For a beer well available at gas stations, this was decent. It was a standard micro brew US ESB. Bready, but thicker than a Brit one would be, gentle spice that might be wet old cumin, touch of hops, of the piney variety. I would be interested in finding more RedHook, it seems to be like the Western US version of Canadas Kieths and Rickards.

It pours a burnt-orange/amber with an almost inch-thick white/light-brown head and rather copious lace surrounding the head. An aroma of bready caramel malts, faint hops, orange and citrus, bitters, some brown sugar and spices. The mouthfeel is smooth, thick, and rich. Flavors of caramel malts, hops, orange and citrus, bitters, bread and yeast, some tea, and spiciness. A solid, action-packed brew.

Pours out an amber color with a small head that is gone fast. Aroma is a bit citrusy and slight scent of hops. Taste is a bit on the bland side with a tiny bit of bitterness in the finish.

A light amber colored beer. Small head. No hang time. And no lacing. This has got to get better. Buttered bread and citrus hops on the nose and in the flavored. A light to medium, syrupy body. Subtle enough in character that it could be a decent session beer.
