My second beer off the the taps at the Portsmouth Brewery, on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon. And while I was mightily impressed with their IPA, this Alt (they cut off the "Düsseldorf" when they did this recipe the first I visited this brewpub) is merely "good" -- nothing more.

After tasting this, I immediately wished it was a bit sharper and a bit more bitter. In other words, this seems to come across as more of a standard American Amber Ale, than any sort of a cold-conditioned German (Amber) Ale.

Granted, this is indeed a nicely drinkable Amber Ale -- but doesn't really win points in my mind as an Alt. That unto itself isn't a deal-breaker per se, but I think they could have done such a bigger/better job with this one.

Want a decent Amber? Here you go. Want a (more) authentic Alt? Might want to look somewhere else....
