Paulaner Salvator, with its strong, typically malty flavour, is what you could call the "original" Paulaner. The bottom-fermented "Doppelbock" beer combines the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks used to drink Salvator as a food substitute during Lent. The most famous master brewer was Frater Barnabas, who took over the Paulaner monastery brewery in 1773. His original recipe remains practically unchanged to this day. In order to preserve the original, Paulaner registered the name "Salvator" with the patent office in 1896.

I really like this beer. Nice white head and a a clear reddish brown color. Very drinkable with a clean finish. Very well balanced malt to hops ratio.

330ml bottle into glass. Spicy fruit malt nose. Cloudy dark orange beer with small creamy head. Light spritzy mouthfeel with oily texture. Malt backbone gives way to dark fruits and alcohol. It’s like a good rich Christmas cake. Excellent beer, really delicious.

Light amber color with minimal white head. Aroma is a mixture of Munich malts and sweet caramel type malts. The flavor has a nice mixture of a couple types of malts to create depth. Very light hop influence. There is also a hint of yeast fruitiness. Very nice beer.

Smells like a candy stick, rootbeer perhaps. Orangish brown in my steelers glass. Leaves a bitter impression on my tongue. Almost flat. A little too syrupy but not overly sweet, if that is possible. I could barely detect any sweetness at all. Bitterness prevails, but is not overwelming, on the finish.

33cl bottle in Samobor, Croatia. Pours clear, glowing amber with a small off-white head. Malty aroma with caramel and herbal hops. Sweet and a bit caramelly with a quite well balanced bitterness. Medium body with average carbonation. Alcohol is well integrated and makes this dangerously drinkable. Nice and desserty doppelbock. (2013-05-19)

Large ass tan head, nice lacing. Deep amber color, clear. Grainy, fruity nose, some raisins and fresh baked bread. Full body. Slick mouthfeel, but still chewy. Medium sweet malt, bread and some alc. notes with some toffee flavors also. Finish is sweet with some roastiness. A nice double bock.

This is the original doppelbock, the one by which all others will supposedly be measured. I can see why. The beer pours a transparent cherry red colour with a generous long lasting off-white foaming cap. Dark fruits, caramel, and roasted malt comprise the bulk of the aromatic nature with some yeast present for good measure. The flavour is sweet roasted malt and caramel, with hints of plums and bread. I can see why this is a Lenten staple.

Poor appearance. Dark orange colour. The thin head disappears in a flash. Not a spot of lacing. Breaded malt, caramel and banana aroma. Flavour is similar to the aroma but sweeter with over ripe fruit, toffee and a hint of alcohol. Medium syrupy mouthfeel. Tastes ok to start but ends up as sweet blah.

Aroma is malty with a fruity undertone and just a hint of spice. It pours a clear cola brown with a respectable light tan head. Flavor is quite strong, malty with undertones of spice and apple. Texture is fairly smooth and tingly, and it has a fair amount of body. Definitely worth seeking.

I had this beer at at German resturant in Milwaukee. This was a GREAT beer. It was a strong bock for sure, but the alcohol, at 7.5 was really hidden. A supremely balanced beer. Nice malt profile - smooth beer.
