Commercial Description: We’re rolling out a new Imperial series with the first beer scheduled to release January ’09. These larger-than-life beers will be sold in 22 oz bottles and on draft. Brewed with more malts and more hops, these beers are big, bold, flavorful, and high-octane. The first in the series is a Russian Imperial Stout. The style was first brewed in England for the Russian Czar and it is the king of stouts. Plenty of big malt flavors- chocolate and roasted- and high alcohol with lower carbonation and mild hops. We brewed this beer with double the malts and four times the hops of regular stouts! Otter Creek Russian Imperial Stout clocks in around 10% ABV- a beer to be savored responsibly. True to style, this beer will last for years so you may want to stock up on a few bottles for your cellar while it’s available.

I think this beer must have improved over the years after reading some of these bad reviews. This is a solid RIS. Starts with a great appearance. The large dense creamy head thins but does stick around. Lacing is oily and slick. Flavour has roasted malt, dark fruit, dark chocolate, vanilla and caramel. It's also a bit earthy with background pepper. All good stuff in the aroma apart from the slight medicinal niff. Silky smooth and oily mouthfeel. Alcohol warmth is more noticeable and welcome towards the end.

~6 months since purchase. Solid RIS, much better than expected offering from Otter Creek. This is a very dark beer. The liquid is black and opaque. The head is a creamy light brown. The aroma is a mixture of sweet fruity malt, roasted grain and a light madeira note. I have a feeling this beer could have lasted significantly longer in the cellar. The flavor is relatively dry from the roast. There’s some vanilla and alcohol burn on the tongue, as well. The mouthfeel is a tad thin but not too bad. It’s a very solid example of the style.

Black, viscous pour producing a thin, filmy brown head and little spots of lacing. Big coffee aroma with plenty of roasted malts to back it up, not too developed in the scent department but still pleasant. Mild bodied for the style, I prefer a chewier stout but all in all it went down nice and easy. Coffee and nuts with burnt/roasted malt and some chocolates. Again it was good flavor, just not overly developed to capture my interest.

It is indeed RIS season again. Cold and rainy outside, and I wanted something big and warm to drink. Luckily, I had this in the fridge. Smells like one of those mochaccino drinks, tastes like a chocolate liqueur. Not-quite-as-thick-as-motor-oil pour, with a brown sudsy head (which doesn't last very long). Some anise in the flavor profile too. A little too much of an alcohol burn for me. Goes down so smoothly. The subtle carbonation adds a little body, and prevents it from going down like syrup. A good Russian Imperial Stout, and I will try to find more from this brewer.

I’m always a little gun-shy at impy’s that have an overly ashy aroma and flavor. Usually it’s a deal-breaker for me. As soon as I smell or taste it, it’s over. Thankfully, this beer had neither. Huge coffee notes in the aroma and flavor. Smokey, mocha, brown sugar and light toffee notes in the aroma too. Flavor is strong without being brash. Coffee, chocolate, brown sugar, charred wood and alcohol are all present. Long bitter coffee finish. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied. Could of used a bit more thickness. Worth the money (think i paid $7.00/22 oz bottle).

Tasty but disappointing for an RIS. Aroma was pure mocha, chocolate and coffee, no malt aroma. Poured pitch black. Body was very thin and surprising, almost not to style. Taste is also pure mocha, almost like drinking an alcoholic mocha drink. A little bitterness taste but still an easy drink. Needed more body and malt flavor though.

Poured a dark dark black with good choco head, lacing was okay. Aroma was strong coffee like starbucks strong. Flavor was much the same, chcolate wasn't there at all was a not so good finish taste to it. Other then that good brew.

Poured the usual brown-black, ok initial chocolate covered head, although the lacing was only mediocre. The aroma was strong coffee, some toffee. The flavor was super strong coffee all over the place, but in a good way for the most part, no chocolate detected, per the bottle, some roast. The mouthfeel was moderately bodied, acidic. Primary drawback was some under-attenuation and astringency, but a pretty good OC brew, first in a while? Decent if you like coffee in your IS's.

Roast coffee and dark bitter chocolate in the nose .. . black as a door that was once red but now is painted black .. . . fantastic roast level in the mouth .. . low head for a RIS, but constant medium ring .. .. Yaz is for whores .. . damn fine aroma.. . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgg2kwcsvHo . . Goes down so smooth, way to easy to drink, the 10.5% is no where to be found, even checked under a few rocks, nothing... . This is a great little unknown RIS, recommended!! .. . that sign in the mens room about washing your hands, that's just for the employees, right???

O.C. imp stout poured a standard black, no head, very little lace body. Mouthfeel was a little on the light side for this style. Aroma of coffee, and cocco powder. Flavor wasnt really good at all, burnt coffee, old cocco powder, and the alcohol gave it a medicinal quality. The lingering burnt coffee taste just wouldnt go away. Overall i didnt care for this beer, i wouldnt try it again or recommend it.
