Brewery Ommegang and HBO are partnering on a series of beers in support of the critically-acclaimed drama Game of Thrones. Launching in tandem with the season three debut, Iron Throne is the inaugural beer in the series. Iron Throne is a blonde ale at 6.5% ABV and brewed with a robust amount of pils, honey malt, aroma malts and red wheat. Gentle hopping includes Styrian Golding and Hallertau Spalter Select, appropriately noble hops. Spiced with grains of paradise and lemon peel. Hue is a slightly hazy golden amber. Head is full and fluffy. Finish is crisp, backed by a touch of spice and hops. Aroma is a bit grassy with a hint of lemon fruitiness from the lemon peel. Taste is lightly malty, rounded out by honey malt sweetness.

Pours clear golden with a very thick, slightly yellowish ivory head that hangs around for a bit. Aroma entices with butterscotch, fresh malt, banana, yeast, and a hint of pear. Pleasing flavor trots fresh malt, banana, pear, butterscotch and yeast notes plus just a whisper of hops across the palate. Firm body presents good fizz, and finish features pleasing fruity and malty tones. Play this game!

Single from the LCBO with a best before APRIL 09 2015. Pours a hazy light-golden colour with a big white frothy-creamy head, great retention and some foamy lace. Spicy aromas with some grass, citrus notes and mild Belgian Ale yeast. Medium-full bodied, smooth, almost creamy. Wheat taste with the citrus and grassy hops all well-balanced. A nice Belgian Blonde Ale that goes down well with the American-twist on it, with stronger hops.

Hazy yellow pour with a decent sized bubbly white head. Belgium yeast and lemon aroma. Flavour has sweet breaded malt, Belgium yeast, lemon, clove and is a little peppery and floral. High carbonation and a light mouthfeel. I don't rate this beer as highly as the show.

750ml bottle

Beer pours a hazed dark gold with orange hues and a huge white long lasting head. Aroma is yeast, spices, grains and citrus. Mouthfeel is weak to meadium bodied with average carbonation. Was hoping for something less thin. The flavour is yeast, citrus, and the spices really come through as an herbal addition to the grains. -

750ml bottle with caged cork - decants a murky pale gold ale with a very frothy cap 3 finger cap, lively bottle conditioned carbonation. Aroma is sturdy but not pungent - spicy, cidery fruitiness, yeasty, malty with some light wet hay tones. Light body soft on the palate. Flavour follows aroma except the fruitiness is distinctly peach-like, spice and hops work together over the rigid pale malt spine to give good balance - finish slightly dry and hoppy-sharp. A boiler plate Belgian pale, well crafted but noting rally special to command the sticker price.

Have never seen the show but I want to! Cork popped with a big bang! Golden body with a massive white crown floating on top, probably will get cloudy on the second pour. Aroma is very yeasty, big spice, a musty lemon, maybe hay. Aroma has power. Taste almost has a hopy harshness but its cloaked with big malty yeast bomb. So very smooth. Lemon in the finish, peppery spice, do I hit bubble gum? maybe? Crisp and lively mouth feel. Solid beer!

Fairly typical belgian golden ale, though you can count on Ommegang to put together a well constructed brew. Overly carbonated, but surprisingly soft on the palate. Spices. light fruit and hops and the palate and the nose. Nothing special, save for the bottle itself, but a solid beer.

Pours a light golden amber with a thick head the slowly dissipates into larger bubbles, leaving thick, pillowy lacing. Aroma of sweet malt, Belgian yeast and a faint grassy hop aroma. Flavor follows with sweet malt, Belgian yeast and spicing, particularly clove and coriander; turning rather drier and finishing with light fruit, bittering hops and biscuit malt. A nice mouth feel from active carbonation. A pleasant light Belgian pale, nothing stands out, but well made and fun to drink.
