Ode to a Russian Shipwright is my tribute to the brewing legacy of Peter the Great. I use rye and spruce, ingredients that were important to the Baltic region and sailors, to create a porter honoring the time and tastes of Peter. And true to legend, I've brewed it strong enough to survive a cold winter voyage (from the brewery to the house). Tasting Notes: Rye, spruce, and roast highlight the nose and flavor, with complementary fruit and spice emerging as you drink. The flavor is malty and balanced, with a slightly sticky mouthfeel. Serving Suggestions: Ode to a Russian Shipwright is designed to be served at cellar temperatures, 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour with or without the lees; a good way to distribute the lees is by pouring the first half of the bottle, gently swirling the bottle, and then finishing the pour.

This was ok, but ended up a bit of a fail on a few counts. I dug the spruce, and had fun with the name (what exactly is an imperial stout porter? Pick one) but it was weak on the imperial no matter which. Dark brown pour. Ok. Body was average for a beer, weak and fizzy for the style. I liked the spruce on the nose but that and an ill fitting green olive smell overpowered any toasty roasty goodness. Weak. Flavor was better, more spruce and olive, not As astringent, but still not that great.

2012 spring topped bottle. Pours a semi-transparent dark brown/black with a nice sudsy 2 finger head that goes down slowly. Not much carbonation at all. Aroma is malty with very large hints of yeast. The overall aroma reminds me of a Belgian made ale or sour. Taste is unlike anything I have ever had. Strong hints of spruce, spices, and dried fruits. Overall warming feeling as this one goes down.Tip of the tongue is dry and bitter when you drink this. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and sticky. This is a very interesting beer to have and I glad I did. This brewery seems to push the scale on brewing something that probably hasn't been done before in regards to taste. Actually a very nice beer.
