Coffee dark with a thin layer of foam that becomes a ring. Unidentified vegetal smell predominates, something like cooked onion or asafoetida, with some smoke. It tastes like it smells. It's supposed to be espresso, and I can just barely pick that out, but the flavors have combined badly. Asafoetida: Not a flavor I hate, but not what I want my beer to taste like. Just ain't right. I think there's something wrong with the malt. The carbonation is surprisingly large for a beer that's so unfoamy. Thick and heavy, as it should be.

Pours black with light tan head. Aroma has some coffee and roasted malt with some bitter chocolate and hop mixed in. Mouth is smooth. Flavor is espresso notes but roasted malt and chocolate came through a bit stronger. All in all quite nice for the style.
