A popular black ale created in the early 1800's with increased alcohol & longevity. Imperial versions were developed for the Russian court as they could survive the journey to St. Petersburg. A coffee like nose, with flavours of roasted grain, dark chocolate & a well-balanced creaminess coming from flaked barley with a well-balanced smooth taste.

Can from the brewery. Pours a real dark brown colour with very little ruby highlights. Big frothy mocha-coloured head, good stay and lots of foamy lace. Roasted and chocolate malt nose with hints of coffee, even some hops. The mouthfeel has some bitterness, but wet overall, with some dryness eventually appearing in the far finish. Cocoa powder flavours with the roasted malt. A little more bitter than most stouts with lots of the burnt malts. Better than their Wheat one I had last night.
