A few times a year, we will cut Dan loose to brew whatever he chooses, uncensored, uncut, unplugged. Always handcrafted, this beer is brewed for the adventurous soul. This is a very limited edition and we make no promises to ever brew this style again. This decadent Chocolate Abbey Ale is a lovely trifle for your senses. Brewed with a proprietary Belgian yeast and English Maris Otter Malt it is smooth and rich. Inspired by a recent tour of Europe and brewed with chocolate we enjoyed there. Subtle Segal Ranch hops promote the rich dark chocolate flavors of this rather strong Dubbel. Best served at 48 °F. An elegant excuse to linger after dinner. -Your Friends at New Glarus Brewing Company

    12oz bottle, courtesy of heybeerman

Just the thought of a New Glarus beer is enough to make the mouth of this California guy drool. When I saw this in the box as an extra from heybeerman, the kids scattered while I did the happy dance.

So the beer pours out dark, coca-cola brown body, cloudy with tight, clingy light tan head. The first aroma that hits me, chocolate. Like smelling a chocolate candy bar as you unwrap it. After it warms up a bit, the bubblegum is starting to show up. I didn't get much more than those two components from the aroma, which was a minor disappointment. The flavor is on the lighter-side, compared to other dubbel's out there. Very light chocolate, subtle plummy notes, toasted bread and a smidge of overripe banana. A very nice beer, lots of subtleties and the beer clearly doesn't bonk you on the head with over-the-top profiles, but nor is it full of depth. Very solid.

Opened this knowing it would be unlikely to surpass Southern Tier Choklat or Boulevard Chocolate Ale so my expectations were a little low. Dark brown pour with an ample head. Nice chocolate aroma to start but alcohol took over as the beer warmed. Definitely some chocolate in the taste along with a hint of dark fruits and belgian yeast/spice. Overall, a little thin in body but still a good belgian take on a chocolate beer.

Best of both worlds in this brew. Decadent chocolate in the nose and flavor. Not very sweet though. Bubble gum and Belgian spice, dry bittersweet finish. All the aspects of this work so well together. Thanks john and Travis for bringing this!

Thanks for the bottle, pfoxyjohn! This one poured a deep brown with a light tan head. The rich cocoa nose has some bananas to balance out. There is also a little note of dough. The strong taste of cocoa is warmed by a little bit of booze. Some banana notes are present with mango. There is a light nutty note in the fruity finish. A smooth beer that is nicely balanced.

I don't have much experience with dubbels but this beer really blew me away. Smell of dark fruits and chocolate hit the nose immediately. Light mouthfeel. Flavor is mild, some of the dark fruit is evident but I really get a tootsie roll type flavor from this beer, not too sweet or overpowering, just damn good.

You can find this over in the interestingly unique section. Mottled dark brown pour with a billowing frothy head and enormous lacing, both of which stick around. Fruity aroma with a delicate chocolate and butterscotch nose. Light to medium bodied and very clean with a fizzy quality that didn't quite fit in, would prefer a fuller body and richness on this one. Raisin, banana, mild roast and milk chocolate all follow through on a great flavor profile.

Hell Yeah! Wish List Item: The Wisconsin Beer Mafia brought me a couple of these gems last weekend; pfoxyjohn and phishpond. Deep ruby brown pour with a short-lived medium cream-colored head which leaves very light spotty lacing. Very rich Belgian chocolate aroma, nutty, rich, ripe fruits, Belgian yeasts, awesome freaking goodness all in my nose... Taste is divine: rich chocolate, ripe fruits, nuts, some light Belgian yeasts, this is one of the tastiest beers I've tried all year. The Chocolate and the Dubbel work SOOOOO well together, it melts on the tongue. HUGE thanks to John and Travis for keeping the New Glarus streak alive for me. I LOVE THIS BEER!

Interesting brew coming from NG. I had the idea that this would be more chocolatey than it was, but it was pretty much dubbel all the way, with full choclate nuances underlying the body. Pours a straight up black with no head. Thick, creamy and rather filling. Flavorful yet delicate.

Looks just like a good dubbel, then you smell it, lots of dark fruits and chocolate very nice the way it comes together, very candylike, lots of sweetness. Mouthfeel is actually quite light and has a nice dry finish, not at all cloying like some belgians. Flavor is very mild, the dark fruit is there, so is the chocolate, but neither one overpowering, very nice balance. This beer still tastes like beer, it has great hints of other flavors but the malt and hop presence isn't lost, nicely done.
