Named after an unusual, speckled, vintage MG car, Old Speckled Hen is a pale ale which owes its distinctive character and dry taste to a unique strain of yeast, first used in 1896. The individual blend of flavours reflects skills developed across more than 280 years of independent brewing history.

The beer was originally in a clear bottle showing a translucent reddish-brown beer. The beer poured a translucent red with a thin tan head. The aroma was caramel malt, some nuts, and a little yeast. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, well carbonated, and crisp. The flavour is nutty malt, with a nice hop balance, a very enjoyable beer.

Pours a beautiful clear coppery-brown with just a little head. Aroma is strong and malty. Flavor is richly malty, with some hop bitterness, not complex but smooth and very satisfying.

Pours an average size frothy off-white head. Has a clean, light amber appearance. Dirty lacing. Aromas of roasted barley malts, caramel and light resin hops. Very light flavours of caramel malts, hints of toffee and mild spices. Medium bodied mouthfeel. Faint carbonation. Not bad.

Clear orange ruby with brownish foam head, lacing to glass. Aroma is sweet caramel with some barley and yeast. Taste is bit too sweet, low bitter. Short sweet aftertaste turning bitter in throat. (Barnsley 201208)

poured a nice dark amber, with only a little head, that quickly disappeared. It had an aroma of toffee and bitter hops. Carbonation was a little week for me as was the overall taste. Might be better in bottle or on draft in lieu of nitro can.

Been curious to try this for a while, and finally did. Had the impression that it may be a little weak and sub-par for an english import...but this did not let me down. Got better and better towards the end of the glass. And....was part of my 1/2 clearance bundle. For a buck a bottle, I am running back to my local retailer tomorrow to buy a few more of these if still there. One of the better ESBs out there.

Sampled from a 440 ml widget can. This ale takes an eternity to settle but it's well worth the wait. A slightly musty pub smell strugles to penetrate the puffy foam head. A copper color and creamy mouthfeel compliment this beers taste which is a little sour and more bland than I imagined. Maybe I tried this one too cold. Will let it warm up next time. Overall, weird name, decent beer.

Yoeman bitter this. Very nice bronze color, no real standout flavors, just a nicely balanced bitter. Love it the day after! There is a strong version of this Old Crafty Hen runs around 6.5 with all the best of Speckled and more punch.

This is a nice beer, i could drink a couple of these . Beauty of a red color, tight foam top, aroma and flavor is different for me . The flavor is better than the aroma but the aroma is not bad. Shall give my blessing to this one, would recommend a try.

Decent enough, but a bit on the watery side for me. Nice aroma and it does pour well. Feels like an ale in the mouth, but has a weakish flavour. Not bad.

Pours a nice amber/red with a small off white head that dissipates quickly leaving no lacing. Aromas of sweet malts, toffee, and bitter hops. Taste is caramel/toffee sweet malts and bitter hops. Mouthfeel is medium with low carbonation and a smooth dry finish. overall good.
