A tasty, complex beer with malt and hops throughout and a long, satisfying bitter finish. Well worthy of the title 'Champion Beer of Britain' award 1997.

Cask@GBBF2010. Clear amber colour with a small slightly off-white head. Aroma and flavour are both crisp crystal malty notes as well as caramel and mild chocolate maltyness. Also rather grassy and floral hopping and slight dried fruityness.

The body is an attractive dark copper, but it’s near impossible to raise a head on this thing. The best I got was wisps of foam. The aroma is malty with caramel, maple, rum and brown sugar. Not much in the way of hops though. The flavor is all that and a touch of sweetness. The mouthfeel would be good if the beer had a little more carbonation, but overall not bad.

Pours with little head and seems relatively dark for a bitter. The aroma has caramel and vanilla. The flavor is chocolate and pancake syrup (not maple). The sweetness is well noted, but not too strong. This is interesting and would merit another try.

Given the right conditions a fantastic ale.

I enjoyed this beer a lot, except for the price. It was smooth and very drinkable. The malt stood out the most in aroma and flavor, making the beer start sweet but a balanced ending from the hops coming through.
