Monteith’s Pilsner Beer is a Bohemian-style lager in the heritage of extremely hopped blonde beers brewed in parts of Eastern Europe. It has a complex hop aroma and a rich hop bitterness characteristic of this tradition in brewing. Monteith’s Pilsner Beer has a malty quality that includes smooth caramel characteristics from the use of Vienna-style crystal malts. The key flavour is its enormous hop character, crafted around this complex malt flavour. Using a very special antique hop variety known as a ‘noble hop’, Monteith’s brewers have been able to carefully balance wonderful hop aromas with smooth clean bitterness. This complex noble hop aroma deliver a natural freshness, enhanced by the brewery’s tradition of not pasteurising. This tends to better preserve the natural traditional flavours. Monteith’s Pilsner Beer is a premium beer that challenges the perception of lagers being merely light and mild. This tradition of highly hopped beers descends from the earliest days on the West Coast when hops were grown locally from Hokitika to Reefton and up to Motueka.

Bottled (from bierzwerg.de). Yellowish golden colour with a small white head. Aroma is bready malts, some slight hayish notes as well as some mild sweetness. Flavour is fruits, bready malts, some grassy and hayish hoppyness. Mild toffeeish notes as well.

Sampled on 5/3/2010. This Czech Pilsner pours a medium orange gold color from a 33cl bottle. Small sized white foamy head, with decent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is cereal, a touch grassy and citrusy hops. A medium to light bodied pilsner. The malts are grainy, fruity and sweet. The hops are citrusy and herbal. Nice carbonation but seems a touch flat for a pilsner. There is a slightly spiciness at the finish. Crisp and clean, light and refreshing pilsner. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Pours a honey gold, with a thin white head. Flinty hops, fresh, like a premium Aussie macro. Inoffensive beer; fairly well balanced grain malt hop... easy drinking, but nothing too remarkable to write about. Could use it as a good session beer on a warm day.

Bought it a place that I think was called Trader Joe's in Temecula, CA. It's just north of the mall. Dumped out a pale gold with a white weak quick death head - bubbles....going going gone. Meh. Smelt ok, but nothing out of the ordinary - sweet, grass, hops, malts. Christ, I've got the Westmalle Tripel hiccups....Taste ,well, quite drinkable considering tasting fake - plain malts, hops, grain and this "I made this in my basement and bottled it in old plastic pop bottles" ( the ones with the 2 colours and bubbles). Went down prety smooth leaving a good bitter aftertaste - just a little slick though.

clear bright golden colour, little unregular foam, decent hoppy nose with nutty notes, medium-bodied, tart and slightly dry, bitter herbal and malty finish - correct

"Monteith's Lively Hopped Pilsner Beer", eh? Well, I'm glad I paid less than a dollar for this, that's for sure.
Reasonably decent aroma -- I would prefer a "punchier" aroma in the nose, but perhaps that's just wishful thinking on my part. And the appearence doesn't really inspire me to wax poetic, either. Carbonation, but no head/foam. Body about par for the course in apearence -- pale-ish gold.
But now comes the first sip, and that's where I start to have real problems with this Kiwi import. Can a beer be described as being "gamey"? What about inhospitable? Or just plain unappealing? This beer is all that, and more.
With the buttery mouthfeel, unappealing (almost unapproachable) flavor profile, in a presentation that leaves a lot to be desired..., this yet another Monteith's beer I couldn't care less about. Not to belabor the point, but this isn't even worth $0.75, IMO.

This is becoming my new favorite with every 6-pack. This is hoppy and bitter and clean and just about perfectly balanced in every aspect. A really clean after taste. If there's anything wrong at all with this beer, it's that the bottle is only 11.2 oz. I guess I'll just drink more
