On January 6th Mikkeller releases no less than an entirely new type of beer: The Coffee IPA. This beer is made as collaboration between Mikkeller and the Swedish coffee geeks Koppi. Lightly toasted Ethiopian coffee and American hops have made this beer something beyond the ordinary. Do not miss this refreshing new beer which is also the first beer from Mikkeller in 2011. Danish: En kaffe-IPA brygget på: vand, malt, havreflager, humle (Tomahawk), kaffe (økologisk Guji Natural fra Sidamo, Etiopien) og gær.

750ml bottle. Pours a hazy golden orange amber with a huge creamy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is a sweet and sour almost bretty twang with some floral earthy hops.
The flavor is sweet malt and some tropical fruit with some floral hop bitterness and a bit of a slight sour/bretty note. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, an interesting beer. It doesn't have the hop notes I normally enjoy (piney, grapefruit). I really get no coffee at all from it - I get more Brett notes which are interesting. If you let it warm and really try, there might be a slight coffee note. -

I was give the opportunity to try this new beer at Mikkeller Bar on 20 January 2011. This beer was a unique experience, not only because the taste was different, but because the draught version and the bottle version taste completely different - it's a complete enigma! The draught version tastes exactly like a traditional American pale ale. The bottle version not only smells different but you can actually taste the coffe in the IPA. It is a really nice combination - I was not sure I would enjoy it but it was fantastic (the bottle version). My new friend Tore (bartender of Mikkeller Bar and brewer extraordinaire - try To Ol beers when they reach the states) is completely miffed as to the major discrepancy between the draught and bottle offerings. In any event, it was good and you should grab a BOTTLE when it becomes available.
