This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

Strong aroma is more fruity than hoppy, a bit on the sweet side but not off-putting. Pours a clear, dark amber headed towards mahogany with a thick, persistent, fluffy pale tan head. Strongly hoppy flavor has a sweet fruity note that peeks through and balances the bitterness of the hops. Smooth texture is rough around the edges and has decent fizz and body.

On Tap at Apex in Portland. Nice beer, amber/orange colour, off white head. Quite bitter, medium bodied, mostly floral/perfumy hops, but in a really bitter way, grapefruit zest and undderipe orange only show up in small doses here and there. Nice, worth drinking if you see it.

Sampled on 12/3/2011. This IPA pours a medium orange color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, with decent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is caramel, fruity, grapefruity and herbal. A medium bodied IPA. The malts are fruity, sweet and caramel. The hops are grapefruity and piney. Medium to high bitterness. Decent carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Another in the great education series from Mikkeller. This issue is intensely bitter, nicely complex with great floral notes that round with a fruity afterthought. Expensive, but worth trying.

Draught@CPH BF 2011. Amber colour, beige creamy head. Leaves nice lace. Aroma is fruity, bready and mild cookies as well. Flavour is being quite similar with fruits and cookies dominating.
