This is a wonderful example of the Scotch Ale style. Upon pouring the beer, one first notices the gorgeous dark amber color so typical of this style. The aroma of this beer is almost citrus, which was definitely odd. Very pleasant, just not what I was expecting. You can definitely detect the hints of smoke and barley that you expect, but definitely overshadowed by a light, fruity aroma that really pleases the nose. This beer poured with a small amount of white foam on top that left slight lacing on the side of the glass. The mouthfeel really told me I had a winner here. This is the first beer I have had where the alcohol tingling sensation is apparent immediately. The slight carbonation combined with the 8% abv really work well together and do what some other 8% or more abv beers have failed to do for me. Very nice. The smokiness that barely makes its way to the nose is really apparent when in the mouth. Not overpowering in the least. With the reviews claiming skunkiness, I was wary, but I detected none of this in either bottle that I have had. The sweetness that could be overpowering in a Scotch Ale is nicely tempered by the alcohol, which can really be detected on the lips and tongue after swallowing, and the aftertaste is easily one of the best for a Scotch Ale. In a Scotch Ale, you expect little to no bitterness as the Scots made their ales without much in the way of hops, and this brew definitely meets expectations here. Little to no bitterness makes its way into the wonderful flavor or aftertaste of this delightful beer. A note on the alcohol. The high presence of alcohol characteristics could easily lead someone to think that it tastes as though Scotch has been added to the mix here. However, Scotch is just as subjective a taste as beer, and I myself find it to be a refreshing addition to the Scotch Ale lineup. To my knowledge, Scotch has not been added, but Scotch lovers may find a little more in this beer to appeal to their tastes due to the high alcohol sensations when consuming this beer. I love the Scotch Ale, and my favorite is the Moylan's Kilt Lifter. However, while McEwan's Scotch Ale did not replace the Kilt Lifter in my Hall of Fame, it definitely put itself right next to it. A shining example of the Scotch Ale style, and something of which McEwan's can be proud!

Pours transparent brown with a thick tan head. Aroma produces roast malt, spices, a little sweetness. Flavor furnishes sweet roast malt, woody, spice and bitter hops. Texture adds nice smooth body and perky fizz. Get your wee heavy Scotch on.

Ahhh McEwans, we've met before but that was then, and this is now. I bought a couple sixes of this last winter for my neighbor (who is from Scotland) after he helped me out with some snow removal, I kept one for myself and gave it a try, and, well I didn't like it at all (I also didn't like Guinness then and wow did that change). Almost a full year later I have learned to appreciate good, flavourful beer so I figured I'd grab a six and give it another go. Pours a deep brown with red hues and a huge light brown head. I think I may have poured this one too vigorously as the head will not go away to allow me to sip the beer. Needless to say it has great retention and good chunky lacing. After 5 minutes or so the head has settled down to a couple inches or so. Aroma is slightly sweet with dark fruits, earthy, malty. Flavour is smooth and mellow, sweet malt, raisins or some other dark fruit, roasted, the alcohol is well hidden warming after you swallow. Mmm some coffee in the aftertaste pleases my taste buds. Mouthfeel is full with low carbonation. Solid brew, I'm happy to say my second tasting was much better than the first. I'll probably buy again sometime.

Dates and raisins all the way, the aroma bears daubs of white chocolate and the occasional tinge of soy sauce. This is among my favorite beers. Dark reddish-brown with pretty head and lacing. I've had other good offerings in the style, but the consistent quality of this brew leads me back to the same shelf time and time again.

This is one of my favorites so I'm surprised I haven't reviewed it until now. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a medium off-white head. Soft yet complex aroma of sweet malts, mocha, caramel and some fruits. Tastes of sweet malts and dried fruits with a subtle smoky finish and a hint of alcohol.

Courtesy of philbertgodphry. Pours a deep brown with a nice creamy head and tons of very nice lacing. Some carbonation. Aromas of roasted and slightly smoky malts, a bit of the peat, a wee hint of nuts, and Scottish sea air. Taste is smooth and creamy with a great sweet malty base that hints of the peat and smoke style is known for - this is a great beer.

Smooth, creamy, smokey, malty - I could go on, but you get the idea. This is a great beer - best with hearty fare if you're having a meal - Sheperd's Pie comes to mind.

classic to the style. sometimes, this one can have a little too strong of a metallic/copper/astringent taste, but only sometimes. it's a solid, smooth, smokey/malty effort. recomended.

This beer is a mahogany coloured beer with a nice sized tan coloured head. The aroma is sweet malt, brown sugar, and some hops. The flavour is very sweet but is rounded out nicely by the hops.

McEwans scotch ale poured a deep brown body, when held to light a nice amber color appears, lightly carbonated the is a thin head. Aroma of sweet bread and malt. Flavors of the forementioned along with hints of chocolate, and brown sugar. Creamy mouthfeel smooth despite the 8% alc. Overall a pretty good beer.

I really like this one. Pours with a deep brown body with a really good tannish head on pour. Eventually settles into a gentle foamy ring. The nose detects a sour hint of bread. The flavor supports that impression with an added hint of coffee.
