St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is our tribute to the brawny ink-black beers crafted for the Russian Imperial House in the 18th century. Made from a blend of barley malts infused with Cascade, Goldings and Willamette hops, it’s aged in bourbon oak, giving it seductive vanilla, espresso and chocolate notes. ABV's vary depending on vintage

Pours a very small brownish head and doesn't stay long. Has an extremely dark appearance, pitch black pretty much. Alcohol scent is pretty noticeable at first, then aromas of dark chocolates, coffee and mild goldings and cascade like hops comes through. Very nice. Flavours are fairly bitter with resin and spiced hops, some dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee. Wood aged in bourbon, it comes through fairly abundantly. Also notes of nuts and toast. Slick and oily mouthfeel. Warming tingling sensation. Lively carbonation. Pretty darn good. Aged it for about a year and enjoyed it July 17th/'13. Very good indeed.

Bottle picked up from cyrenaica on a visit to Toronto in early August. This was bottled in October 2011. It pours a solid black color, head is creamy and brown in color. Aroma is top-notch. Bourbon, vanilla, dark chocolate, coffee, and molasses can all be picked out. The flavor is very well balanced. It starts off with sweet molasses, caramel, and vanilla and by the finish, you get the roasted coffee bitterness expected from fine stouts. Too bad it's a limited edition beer.

2009, 2010, and 2011 vintages. most of the Canadian beers I have tried and have been rather 'blah', this was an exception. It also seems to get better with age as the 2009 vintage was scrumptious. A black pour into the McAusland tulip with a huge creamy brown head. Nuts, roasted malt, coffee, and vanilla filled the air. Full bodied and creamy. Lots of roasted flavour as well, balanced by vanilla and bourbon. Very well done.

2011 Vintage
Milton LCBO Outlet #1 (Milton, Ontario, Canada)
December 13, 2011
I tried this beer on December 13, 2011 after purchasing from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer poured a pitch black colour with a 1" dark brown head that stuck around. The aroma was roasted malt, vanilla, coffee and molasses. The mouthfeel was creamy and full-bodied with good carbonation. Flavour was coffee, molasses and a hint of smoke. Well worth it. -

If there is one thing that McAusland does well, it is stouts. Between their world class Oatmeal Stout and this, one would be quite content! Blackest stout in Canada with lots of roasted coffee and chocolate notes in both the aroma and flavour. Great body!

Extreme dark brown body with an ok cap which is long lasting. Sweet bakers chocolate with cinnamon, vanilla, mild alcohol and mild elements of smoke make up the yummy aroma. Brew is intense without being rough which is always a good thing. Burnt sugar and lots of it in the flavor, mild smoke, hints of coffee, with a sweet earthy after taste. After a while a pepper flavor becomes very evident. Great beer nice and smooth full of flavor and remains highly drinkable.

Purchased at Marché Omni and comes in a scotch tube, 2010 edition. Pours a real dark brown (almost black) with hardly any ruby highlights. Its head is huge, creamy, everlasting, and moca coloured. Aromas has lots of molasses, roasted and caramel malts, with hints of chocolate, coffee, licorice and spices. Oily mouthfeel with no burns from the high alcohol. Much of the aromas are found in the taste, but this is where the vanilla shows up (from the bourbon aged-wood). Quite a nice treat from McAuslan... always pleasant to see another one from this great brewer.
