Marston’s Pedigree Very Special Old Pale is our finest expression of a classic Pale Ale. It is exceptionally complex and layered, slowly matured over five weeks in the oak casks of our Burton Unions. A two stage hopping process delivers an intense hoppy aroma and the addition of brandy oak cask staves creates a subtle mellow character to the beer. VSOP delivers a rich complex pale ale with an opulent and luxurious finish. Enjoy.

Looked good for a second. The bottle is kind of ok.Got to be up at 5.30 in the morning.Think I'll save the other bottle for my ugly neighbour,or use it as a meat tenderizer.

Light orange appearance with a little white cap which disappear quickly,we feel faintly the oak barrel brandy in which this fine Ale mature some alcohol in the mix not bad and quite subtle...Mouthfeel: the alcohol takes you first and then some sweet from the malt appear.Easy to drink but to tell you the truth i was expecting something more complex, agin not bad but not great either...

500ml bottle

The beer poured a translucent light red colour with a frothy tan cap that quickly disappeared. The aroma is alcohol, grains, some caramel as well. The mouthfeel was full bodied and creamy with mild carbonation. The flavour was dominated by alcohol and rubber-like bitterness. I will not buy again. -

500ml bottle, decants a deep burnished gold ale with a smallish rocky white cap. Reduces to surface lace and lasts. Moderate carbonation. Very understated aroma for a barrel aged strong pale…no oak in the nose just light malt tones and some faint grassiness. Nice chew of amber Marris floor malts in front, bold malting is balanced quickly by some piney resinous hopping. Nice palate – husky malts load the center as resinous hopping bites the edges and back of the palate. I’m missing the complexity that is supposed to develop. Big bodied for a commercial pale, malty character, soft Burton mouth feel. Goes to a momentary penetrating bittering in the finish. Far better than other Marston’s Pales or ESBs. Very substantial and satisfying for a Brit pale. Quite nice.

Comes in a brown bottle here, from the LCBO (not clear). Pours a deep golden colour with an amber hue. The head is big, frothy, fluffy, has great retention and decent lacing. The aromas remind me of some malt liquors, but a little milder. Alcohol, malts, hops. The taste also does that. At least the mouthfeel is pretty smooth and silky, almost creamy. A little fruit and hop shows up in the aftertaste which kind of saves this brew. Overall, seems like a classier malt liquor, with a classy name (if you know Cognacs).
