Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Each time a barrel is filled, a measure of liquid seeps into the oak and is lost for good. This striking Strong Ale is brewed with copious amounts of Caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied bourbon barrels. The beer spends almost six months in oak before it is packaged for release.

2011 bottle, bourbon version - coca cola pour with the lost abbey trademarked flatness. Even a heavy pour wouldn't have produced any semblance of head. String oak and bourbon on the nose with faint caramel notes. Very flat mouthfeel, no pleasant carbonation. Bourbon forward Flavors with vanilla and oak dominating. Other notes of biscuity caramel and dark fruits - raisins and dates are present. I've had this a few times and found it top notch, but the lack of carbonation brings the score down quite a bit.

thanks Kyle! purchased in europe .. . small pop of the cork, light light fizz .. . not infected, which makes this a treat .. . pours a deep ruby molasses .. light foam .. . light bourbon, barrel, touch of vanilla, roast oak, and burnt caramel .. . pretty damn tasty! .. . .
Does anybody but me think the hat's a little precious? -

Strong aroma is quite fruity, what I expect from a barleywine, with a syrupy feel and an overtone of caramel and brown sugar. It pours a dark opaque chocolate brown with a thin tan head that quickly hits the road. Flavor is fruity with hints of caramel, brandy and molasses and a strong but not too fierce alcohol bite. Texture is smooth as almond milk with a nice sharp and ragged edge. This one is spendy, but if you are a barleywine nut I'm sure it will be up your alley.

2008 375ml bottle -
Aroma - vanilla and bourbon really jump out at me on the initial sniff. Raisins, oak, light brown sugar/raw sugar, and black cherry ice cream.
Appearance - body looked like something drained from a rusty gutter...cloudy, muddy brown mixed with brick red, creamy light tan 1/2" head...plenty of carbonation.
Taste - Perfect. An excellent balance of bourbon character with a perfect barleywine. Neither overwhelmes the other, and in fact the bourbon just accentuates the barleywine notes. Incredibly complex with bounding notes of vanilla ice cream, bourbon, toasted oak, raisin puree with cherries, toffee...beautiful.
Palate - Creamy, slightly biting, medium bodied with thickness to match, fairly sticky from the sugars.
Overall - Well worth the wait and opening on a special occasion (my 14th wedding anniversary) will be worth remembering. -

damn this was smooth. actually was more unique than the brandy barrel, which was surprising given the plethora of BB beers out there. not sickly sweet like some of those, though. GREAT sipper...tobacco, fig, vanilla...quite complex and ridiculously smooth.

375 ml bottle. Pours out in a dark reddish brown colour with just some small beig e bubbles on top. Big yet rounded aroma of oak, toffee, coconuts, caramel, figs and canned apricots. Full-bodied of course with strong notes of wood, caramel, vanilla, raisins and vinous alcohol. Long warming finish of oak, vanilla, cburnt caramel and mild alcohol. Really good stufrf but I prefer the the original Angels Share(Brandy barrel that is).

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a medium foamy head with little to no retention and no lacing. Aroma of bourbon with light vanilla and balanced sweet rich malt. Taste is a well balanced mix between some deep rich English style malt with light dry fruits and with great notes of bourbon and light vanilla. Body is fuller then average with very low carbonation but still enough to be enjoyable with no apparent alcohol which is surprising considering the clear notes of bourbon. Not bad thought not sure it is worth the price tag or should be ion the top 50 but glad I tried it anyway.

Cask@GBBF2008. Very dark brown colour, close to black, small beigeish brown head, which disappeared quite fast. Wow, so where do I begin? Aroma is raisins and sweet wood along with some vanilla at the first breath-in. The following ones bring a lot of stuff, mild notes of alcohol and chocolate, some slight madeiraish sweetness along with fruityness. Some sweetish sour notes of old coffee. Flavour is about as comples, or maybe even more so. The evident notes are wood, sweet fruits and some spices. All this mixed in with a warming touch of alcohol and some slight notes of smoked wood. Long sweetish caramelly and wooden aftertaste in this beauty. This was beer was a real mindblower, and if the various parts of the mouth picking up flavours could get orgasms, this beer would probably be the one doing it...

750ml bottle generously shared by bockyhorsey on a beautiful 80-85F day in phoenix. holy cork pop! dark brown-black body, huge choco-colored head, steady lacing. Wonderful nose of light oak and even some sawdust, light bourbon (really quite light, very nicely done), wonderful bwine underneath (haven't even had my bottle of the regular AS yet). too bad an ounce or so gushed over onto the ground upon opening, so yummy! Thanks, Bill!

Cask at the GBBF 2008, gravity dispense. Nearly black colour (very dark reddish brown). Intense and lovely aroma of various subtropical woods, winey notes. The mouthfeel has lots of alcoholic warmth as expected. The flavour has notes of oak and fortified wine. Very good.
