“Lancaster Black is a classic, traditional stout reminiscent of the beer typically found in Lancashire during the 18th and 19th century. Black combines a complex taste with a rich and full body. At 4.6%, Black may be dark in appearance but is surprisingly crisp with a full bouquet of crisp fruits, spices and floral aromas. Brewed using a combination of Cascade and Challenger hops combined with Chocolate and Maris Otter malt, Black is a stout for the true connoisseur."

Smoky aroma has notes of licorice, molasses and coffee - plus a strange, yeasty, almost plastic-like overtone, but this may be from something odd that happened to this particular batch. It pours a nice opaque sable with a fairly thick, if not too persistent, light tan head that leaves some generous lacing. Flavor has a strong smoky note plus tones of licorice, molasses and coffee and a hint of unsweet chocolate. The mysterious plastic-ish note seems to diminish as I consume the beer. Smooth texture has firm body and a good amount of fizz. Not the best stout I’ve had, but still pleasing.

Cask@GBBF2009. Quite much pitch black colour with small beige head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts, some mild liquorice as well as mild spicyness. Flavour is bready, nutty, coffeeish, liquorice and also has a bunch of wood and toffee in it. Very pleasant.

Picked this up just because it was on sale and new to me. Black pour with a thick tan head. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Aroma and taste dominated by roasted malt and chocolate with some fruity hops in the background. Nice to know so much flavor can be packed into a lower ABV beer.

500 ml bottle, a Christmas present from my nephew Einar, thanks! ABV is 4.6%. Black colour, big to moderate tan head, nice lacing. Moderate aroma of roasted malts, some fruity hints. The flavour is crisp, fairly dry and moderately roasty throughout, hints of lemons (is Cascade in a stout really a good idea?). Very drinkable, but not the most impressive stout I’ve had.

A truly exceptional stout that merits mention of the highest caliber in this type. Excellent chocolate flavours and maltiness. Thick head with great lacing and aroma throughout. Truly exceptional experience.
