SULTANA GOLD (North American Blonde Ale) An easy drinking, smooth beer. Contains malted wheat as well as pilsner and pale ale malts. Hop flavour is low to moderate. THE HISTORY BEHIND THE NAME MINING AT SULTANA MAY BE OVER…BUT SULTANA BEER IS BACK. Our smooth Sultana Gold Ale is named “Sultana” after the local mine made famous during the gold rush of the late 1800’s. The gold rush era proved to be an exciting, adventurous time in Kenora known then as “Rat Portage”. Sultana Mine was located on Sultana Island, 11 Kilometres south-east of town and was the largest and most profitable gold mine in the area, often making over $10,000 a month ($250,000 in today’s currency). The mine operated for 14 years and extracted approximately 1 million dollars in gold. It was later sold in 1899 to a British company. Sultana continued to run with gusto until it experienced flooding issues which slowed things down; it eventually flooded completely in 1902, causing it to close. By 1911 nearly all mines in the area had stopped the hunt for gold and Kenora’s gold digging days seemed to be over. Today some mining still continues in the area, and who knows what the future will bring. For now Lake of the Woods Brewing Company Inc. (LOWBrewCo). will revive the “Sultana Gold” (also one of the original brewing companies brand names “Sultana Lager”) and will toast to the good fortune of local present day miners! Good luck! 473ml tallboy from LCBO. Pours a huge foamy bubbly white head that dissipates fairly quickly and has a pale golden appearance. Excessive carbonation. Medium retention. Aromas of grainy and sweet malts, some barley and hints of corn. Flavours are not that much different, very malty and grainy. Wet mouthfeel. Also a bit of a rusty like finish. Not bad.

Pours a golden colour with very minuscule particles floating around. The head is big, creamy, fluffy, warm off-white, long lasting and gives out sticky lacing. Biscuit malt nose with a little hop. Mildly grainy taste, but more grassy hops kicking in the finish. Metallic hints from time to time and the grain lingers later. Quite a nice hoppier blonde ale. Reminds me of a micro version of the Labatt 50. And I love 50 as my bar go-to-beer.
