Alltech’s Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co.’s roots in Kentucky craft brewing are the impetus behind its annual Pro-Am Brew-Off, which inspires spirited competition among local craft brewers with its alluring prize package of production, distribution and entrance into the Great American Beer Festival. This year’s winning brew – Hopfield and McCoy by Kurt Greivenkamp, Scott Roseburrough and Brandon Nevil, owners of Cock & Bull in Covington, Ky.’s Mainstrasse Village – taps into a sordid tale of family feud. Described as a “shotgun blast to the tastebuds,” Hopfield and McCoy is a deep golden Imperial India Pale Ale with an assertive bitterness balanced by a malty backbone.

Not the all out hop assault I was hoping for, but clearly a burly IIPA. In fact the pint I sipped on seemed to toe the line between barleywine and double IPA. Beautiful deep copper color with a frothy, lasting head and blanketing lacing. Evergreen, citrus, and caramel are priority throughout. Medium to full bodied, malty and nicely bitter.
