Jopen Extra Stout is a typical Dutch stout. The dry stout is also called the espresso among the beers because of the burnt bitter taste. Just like in coffee and cocoa. The last breweries in Haarlem, which were still active at the beginning of 1900, all brewing an extra stout. Jopen has revived this beer style. The Dutch stout contains between 5 and 6% alcohol.

Shared 300 ml bottle at local tasting, from Voldby Købmandsgaard. BB date 9.Nov 13. ABV is 5.5%. Black colour, tan head. Malty aroma, notes of molasses, only mild roasty notes with hints of mild coffee, chocolate and dark dried fruits. The flavour is not very sweet, and here the roasty notes of coffee are more distinct. Some hops in the finish. A quite decent stout.

Pours a dark-chocolate brown that lets a snip of daylight through at the very edges and has a fairly thick, if not too persistent, tan head. Aroma has notes of roast malt, coffee and chocolate, not strong but inviting. Flavor has burnt malt and roast coffee tones plus a hint of chocolate, not as complex as most stouts I have sampled. Texture seems thin for a stout, not very fizzy. Finish is mainly burnt wood. Not great, but give it a fair shake.

Bottled. Ruby red colour with big beige head. Aroma is slightly metallic hops with some sweet caramelly notes. Flavour is mild roasted notes with lots of grass and sourness. Quite Benelux-stouty.
