So Jailhouse John says, “let’s do a red IPA and call it Molly Ringwald”. BRILLIANT! I know it had nothing to do with a teenage crush or the fact that he has a red beard. Sometimes that’s all it takes is a spark of inspiration. We’d also been toying with our redneck hopback and had some great success. With a slew of whole leaf Amarillo hops screaming our names, it was on! The approach is always to keep it as simple as possible without being boring. We kept the grain subdued enough not to interfere with the hops but robust enough to hold up to the hops and provide the color. Chinook is a personal favorite of mine but it can be overbearing if not used with care. I felt this would be a great time to bring it to the party. Centennial hops were added for some diversity and added bitterness as well as those citrus tropical flavors. Amarillo whole leaf was used to round out the flavors and give a fresh hop robustness. Orange red color with tropical fruit and hints of caramel sweetness. Subtle pine-fresh hops. Hop driven with a malt back note. Bitterness builds on the palate with a medium bodied mouthfeel. Grain: 2-Row, Melanoidin, C45L, C120L Hops: Chinook, Centennial and Amarillo Yeast: American Ale II

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 9
Comes out of the growler a rich clear chestnut with a thick and rather persistent light buff head. Aroma is quite hoppy, more resiny than woody, with an undertone of Mandarin orange and a hint of fresh malt. Very pleasing flavor has woody hop, evergreen and orange notes, barely bitter, hint of caramel. Smooth texture is fairly firm, if not too fizzy. I love this series!
