London Calling just made sense. Mark Broe from Eagle and Lion fame began contract brewing his amazingly sessionable and tasty beers here at Jailhouse in the past month or so. Please look for his Yes Face IPA at your favorite beer haunts. It only made sense that we collaborate on the 4D and have a little fun. We’ve always brewed more American-style IPAs here and what better time to fire off a great English IPA then now. Mark brings experience and expertise in this style so we figured we’d take the opportunity to learn something and make a really tasty beer. Very sessionable for a 6.5er with that distinctive English hop character. Bittered with English Challenger and finished with both pellet and whole leaf East Kent Golding, London Calling has that distinctive English IPA hop character. Willamette hops, a descendant of English Fuggle, takes the hop profile one step further and rounds out the flavor. We employed a hop tea technique with some whole leaf Amarillos and added another touch of ‘Merica to the beer with a minor dry hop note from Cascades. Yeast and grain offer supporting flavors to the hop profile as they should with an IPA. Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7
Comes out of the growler a clear golden amber with a thick, fluffy and persistent pale buff head. Hoppy aroma has notes of evergreen resin, hay, and grapefruit. Rich, hoppy flavor has a strong resiny tone, as well as woody, malty, hay and grapefruit notes. Bitterness is strong but not fierce. This is a bold IPA, if not the boldest one I have tried. Firm texture has a ragged fizz and leaves a hoppy, woody finish. London calling? You should answer.
