Description As the name suggests, is not for the faint-hearted. This beer is a strong, hearty stout brewed in a very limited quantity a few times a year. It is brewed with seven different barley malts, blackstrap molasses, hops, water, yeast, licorice root and star anise. It has an intense depth of roast earthy flavour, with a pleasant licorice aroma. Award Silver Medal - Experimental Beer - 2011 Canadian Brewing awareds Food Pairing This big, robust licorice beer goes well with chocolate desserts, oysters and red meats. Our Bottle This re-closable bottle, known as a “pot-stopper”, was widely used in Europe and North America prior to the 1950s. Our new combination cap is an innovative design that allows closure by both crown and swing caps. It can be re-used and meets our green packaging objectives.

Pours opaque sable with a thick tan head. Licorice dominates the aroma but gladly shares the stage with toasted malt and a hint of mocha. Flavor features plenty of licorice, as well as roast malt, coffee, molasses and chocolate undertones. A bit sweet, but good. Mouthfeel offers decent fizz and body. Get destroyed - and please, please call a cab, or Lyft, or Uber.

Purchased in Vermont. Pours a dark brown, almost black colour with a light brown coloured head. Pure black licorice nose. Some in the taste, but not as much. Wow ! What a great beer with anise and loads more. Goes down nicely for a high alcohol brew.

FINALLY! this has been on my to drink list for a couple years, and I have always missed it for one reason or other. So much bitter liquorice immediately after opening bottle. Think molasses flavoured stout with so much beautiful anise! Bitter dutch type anise, not twizzlers. Very heavy bodied, lots of bitter, roasty grains and black patent. Some tar, rye and heavy stale bread. Lovely and all I hoped for.

From Firefly Jan 2011, in a one-litre swingtop. Thought $13.85 was a lot to pay, but after drinking it, it was a price well paid. Pour was dark, near black under a fluffy light brown head. Aroma was gloriously black licorice, with lesser notes of alcohol. Flavour was delightfully licorice, and some alcohol without the burn. Wonderful buttery mouthfeel, and licorice finish, maybe some hop. Stunningly good, mine was from January 2011 and came with a nice leather coaster. Gotta another one of these, even without said coaster. Addictive.
