Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7
Like almost all of the beers served up at The Hilltop Brewing Company, this beer's carbonation and head was a bit on the subdued side. Not a problem in my book -- especially since over-carbonation only fills you up faster -- but something to expect from this place.
Big malty nose, with hints of a certian "woody-ness" (oak?) in the aroma. The same can be said for the flavor -- with suggestions of smoke in the middle and the backend. "Brown Malt" used to be made with malted grain over wood fires, so all of that is certianly well-within the style guidelines, in my book (and begs the question why more Brown Ales don't show off such traits).
Oddly sweet in the finish, with the mouthfeel and finish seemingly of two minds -- malty and slightly smokey on one hand, yet somehow light and easy-drinking on the other. A little distracting, but not terribly so overall.
All told, I generally stick with the "Guest" beers at Hilltop Brewing Company. But with interesting "House" beers like this Brown Ale and their Dunkelweizen, there are enough beers there to keep things interesting...! :)
