This blood-red ale may not be what you might expect from a malty and hoppy craft beer. Evil Twin has a rich malt character, without being overly sweet. It has a huge hop character, without being overly bitter. It is a great example of a bold, rich, balanced craft beer, without being heavy and hard to drink in quantity. Our Evil Twin is only bad because it is too good to resist.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Dark red color, nearly black. Moderate and creamy beige head. Hoppy aroma with notes of grapefruit, pine, herbs and spices, also notes of lightly roasted malts. The rich and medium dry flavour is malty first, immediately followed by piney, spicy and grapefruity hops. Ends in a nice bitterness.

Bomber from Central City. Label proclaims "A Bold Red IPA". Well, yes, it is bold and red. Clear ruby pour under a modest head of creamy beige. Much caramel in the aroma, along with alcohol. Mouthfeel a bit jagged to start, improved later. Quite an agreeable flavour, with caramel, some grapefruit, and alcohol. Bitter finish. A worthy effort.

A mahogany colored beer with a big frothy textured beige-white head rising above. There's good hang time on the head. A low thick film and thick ringlet are left. There is grapefruit hoppiness in the nose. More bittering lemon hops are in the tasting but are muted some by caramel malt. A slick, smoothness on the tongue. Nice drink.

pours a hazy dark brown-red with a tan head and no lace and beer is too dark to see any bubbles. The aroma is of citrus and soft pine hops with a mild chocolate malt character and a hint of roast. The taste is some what like the aroma but gone horrible wrong. Taste is overblown by alcohol. The mouth feel is medium-full with an average carbonation for the style. Soft bitterness with a medium sustain supported by chocolate roasted malt which leave a weird after taste.

The balance of this beer has definitely leaned towards the malt. Don't know the age, but the main presence of the hops is bitternes rather than floral aromatics or flavor. Too bad too, cause the malt is rich and tasty, but what's left of the other half of the beer took a little away from the overall enjoyment.

Sampled on 8/17/2011. This American Strong Ale pours a medium reddish color from the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, malty and hoppy. A medium bodied American Strong Ale. The malts are caramel, fruity and sweet. The hops are citrusy, piney and grapefruity. Decent carbonation. Nice hop bite. Some sweetness at the finish but its mostly overwhelmed by a lot of bitterness. A nice Imperial Red Ale. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is bitter.
