Henderson’s flagship, Henderson’s Best, is a modern take on classic ESB – a refreshing ale with a mild floral nose and an ABV of 5%. To create this beer we tried to imagine the beer first brewed in Toronto at the beginning of the 19th century and how it would have changed and matured over the 215 years between then and now. That recipe, tweaked throughout 2015 became Henderson’s Best.

On tap at Bier Markt, Ottawa. Pours an average size frothy tan head, good retention, ample dirty lacing all around. Has a very dark amber coppery appearance. Aromas of bready and toasted malts, subtle smoky hints. Flavours are a little bit sweet, more of the toasted malts. Notes of earthy hops and resin. Some nice bitterness that lingers in the finish.

The beer pours a clear crimson colour with a half inch creamy light brown head which takes a minute to reduce to a lacy film on top. The aroma is grainy malt, weak roasted malt, light caramel, and some noble hop notes. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is bready malts with a weak hop bitterness in the finish. Nothing offensive in the aroma or flavour but nothing that says ‘try me again’ -

Wow. Where has this beer been my whole life? A piney nose gives way to a nice caramel like taste. Has a real nice look to it too. Even my swill loving buddy enjoyed it. Overall, this brew reminds me of a cross between Smithwicks and Rickards.

Bomber pouring a slightly deeper amber colour with a frothy-creamy beige head, good retention and some nice dirty lacing. Caramel malt aromas with hints of rusty hops. The taste has the hops a little stronger than the malts, especially for an ESB. And not the best hops to blend with this one. Other than that, not the worst.
