Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. Sacred Species No.2 YEAR OF THE DATE "The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm." Psalm 92:12. Hark! The second coming of REJEWVENATOR, infused for 2009 with the sacred DATE. Jewish tradition celebrates two New Years: The first in Spring after the barley harvest. The High Holidays in Fall mark the creation of the world. Harvest to harvest - the perfect bookends for deliciousness! Dates were used to sweeten beer in Ancient Egypt as early as 3500 BCE. Pliny the Elder, 1st c. Roman naturalist, lauded Judea’s Dates for their succulence and sweetness. So important for food and shelter, the Date palm became a symbol for the Kingdom of Judea, stamped on the ancient and modern Israeli Shekel coins. Shaking your Lulav on Sukkot and covering your kosher Sukkah demands Date palm leaves. Palm Sunday reenacts the procession of Jesus into Jerusalem. In Arabic, "Tamr" is the 4th stage of a Date’s ripening. Mohammed: "Whoever eats seven fresh Tamr fruits at breakfast shallrise above magic and poison on that day." The Hebrew word for Date palm is "Tamar", commonly describing the beauty and elegance of a woman. Solomon’s sister was named Tamar. "The only difference between a date and a job interview is that not many job interviews have a chance that you’ll end up naked at the end of it." -Jerry Seinfeld. Like its Latin genus the Pheonix, rise and shine with our newest Double Date Shmoppelbock - and flourish! L’Chaim! Why in the hell was this beer so expensive when everyone else was paying significantly less for their brew? Whatever. It was really freakin good. Pours a well carobnated, reddish pink. Aroma is a little boozey, hops, orange on the nose. Taste is well hopped, astringent and super generous in grapefruit.

Pours with a short lived head that is just slightly tan in color. Flavor is a bit on the molasses side, but pleasant. Nicely full body, in fact seems a bit on the syrup side of texture, but not overly sweet. A good moderately complex brew that tasted pretty good!

I'm not a very religious person, so I'm not sure why I would drink a beer that is named from a religiously thematic standpoint. An amber coloured lager with a quickly disappearing tan head is what I see in my glass. Aromas of dark malt, caramel, and floral hops permeate the air. The flavour is sweet malt, molasses, and some spicy tones. Not a bad beer.

Very red with brown hints, a tall tan cap floats on top. The retention was ok, some lacing was left behind when pouring into my wide open mouth. Aroma seems so very concentrated, I can smell figs, dates, hops, wood, some spice. Thick in your face flavor it’s so thick with flavor its chewy but seems to consist of nothing but intensity. There is so much heavy malt flavor here its blowing my mind. Toffee, wood, mild burning alcohol all with the flavor of dates. There is this bitter in the finish that never ever seems to develop fully if you know what I mean. I’ m loving this full thick mouth feel I think it’s my favorite part of this beer. I can start to pick out the Belgium double aspects of this brew (wheat malt) it blends very well with the doppelbock portions. Great beer drink it if you can get it.

Pours a dark red/brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is sweet, with some cherry and raisin notes. Taste is similarly sweet; caramel, raisin, fig and dark fruits also noticeable. An interesting beer but a little too sweet to down a bomber all on one sitting.

Pours out in a clear reddish brown colour with a small bubbly tan-coloured head. Malty sweet and clean aroma of toasted malts, caramel, toffee and cream. Medium to full-bodied with notes of burnt caramel, mild spices, fudge and prunes. Clean, almost sterile mouthfeel. Long clean and malty finish of burnt caramel, cocoa-powder and prunes.

It pours a dark mahogany with creamy brown head and excellent lace. Aroma of sweet malts, fig, raisin, molasses, dates, and mild spices. The mouthfeel is smooth and rich. Flavors of fig, roasted malts, tart, raisin, light hazelnut, and mild spices. Very good, delicious.

At first I didn't know what to think of this beer. Poured about half of it in a wine glass. Had a hazy dark dark brown-slightly purple appearance. I enjoyed the 2nd half more, but there was a bit too much going on there...and I usually prefer malty beers too. Definitely a malt-fig bomb. A decent beer if looking for something different on the fruitier side, but not quite a "fruit beer".

Year of the fig came across as a decent viscous brew, but there was nothing about it that really seemed to capture my interest. Some dark malty and fig aromas coupled by fruity red wine and raisins. Ruby~brown pour, collapsing tan head and spotty lacing. Full bodied, borderline syrupy and rather sweet to the taste buds. A jumbled flavor of mixed berries, sugary malt and bear claws. Meh.

This was just a little too sweet for me. Aroma consists of figs and alcohol. None of the alcohol comes through in the taste, though. The flavor is all excruciatingly sweet malts and figs. Pours a reddish brown with a vague film of what should be a head. Aroma was weak, the taste was too sweet; this is probably the only HeBrew beer that I wouldn't try again (and I love everything else they make).
