COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION To celebrate the brewery’s 19th Anniversary, Great Divide’s brewers deviated from previous years’ anniversary ales and developed an entirely new recipe. The label reads, 19th Anniversary Ale isn’t just a wood-aged ale. It’s a compass – a reminder of where we’ve been and where we’re going. Brewed with pure birch syrup and aged on birch wood, this beer embraces reverential tradition and revolutionary innovation. As we celebrate our 19th year, we hope you’ll join us for the road ahead.

A bright amber colored beer with a small three fingered frothy textured white head rising above. I get the birch as advertised on the label. Makes for an interesting slick bodied beer

    22oz bottle -

I keep an open mind when it comes to American Strong Ale's, because there's such a huge variance between what's good and what's...well, not good. This falls into the "not good" catergory simply due to the strange woody aroma and taste that can only be attributed to the use of birch. The taste is very rooty...earthy, woody, wet dirt. Like squeezing the wood planks of someones root cellar that was built in the 1800's. Strange. Unique, but strange.

Sampled on draft at Choc. Pours copper gold with a thin head. Subtle breast honey vanilla aroma. Full-bodied and gently carbonated. Sweet finish and malt-wood dominant. Dark fruit and some phenolics present too.

Aromas are faint, a touch of wood, and syrup. Clear golden body thin, soapy head that leaves a few random spots of lace. Flavor is much like the aroma, there is a bit of bitterness on the back and the alcohol is noticeable. Overall i am not digging it much, drinkable, thats about it.

Pours clear gold with very minimal head. About all I detect in the aroma is alcohol, maybe rum, with some subtle vanilla topnotes. By contrast, I really liked the flavor, sweet and woody, with hops lending a clean-bitterness. Medium bodied and smooth, not as heavy as expected. Oddly drinkable at 10+%.

After a few years of a very similar wood aged iipa this is definitely unexpected. Birch syrup and birch chips means, you guessed it, birch is the main player. Very pleasant aroma and flavor...but while I liked it, it seemed boozier (like it was spirit barreled) and the hops were pretty much just along for the ride. Worth a shot for a Life & Limb meets iPa type strong ale.
