This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.3% alcohol by volume.

(trade w/changeup45) - Minimal foam after slight pfft opening bottle. Murky muddy dark brown body. Aroma of cocoa powder and raisins. Very sweet. Raisins and figs. Mouthfeel has a texturre like there’s something in it like cocoa. Slight alcoholic aftertaste. Hope to have this on draft someday to see how it tastes fresh.

Bottle courtesy of Degarth. Thanks again. Poured a murky-brackish brown with no head. The aroma is kind of light with shriveled up dates, plums and raisins. Behind that I also smell a nice sweet caramel. The flavor is complex and not altogether smooth. The flavor starts with a bolt of alcohol then alcohol soaked dates, plums and raisins. That takes the taste to beyond midway where a sweet caramel flavor takes over for the main note. Also joining the fun is a roasted maltiness and some cinnamon. Excellent winter sipping brew.

35,5cl bottle shared by Arve_Christian - thanks! Pours clear deep amber with an off-white head. Malty and caramelly aroma with notes of wood, vanilla, spices and bourbon. Sweet and caramelly with nice, but somewhat strange spicy notes and a certain bitterness. Too much on the sweet side, but still quite interesting.

Bottle at Tampa Tasting 26 May: Poured a orange copper color with light head. Aroma is fermented fruit and malt. Taste is a sweet boozy fruit and malt, very similar to a barleywine.

Enjoyed in Vermont. Pours a clean, dark amber colour with a frothy light-beige head, good retention and creamy lacing. Slightly sweet malty aromas with some dark fruits, caramel and light oak. The wood shows up more in the taste creating a nice balance with the caramel and the hints of vanilla. Alcohol nicely hidden. Not as rich as expected, but lots going on, well-blended.

pours a light red or copper with a small head that sank to a rim of foam. The aroma is malty and sugary sweetness, fruity hop aroma, scotch ale sweetness and malt character, found and full nose. The taste is rich and robust, & fruity. The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium bodied with a slightly bitter finish.

355 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgaard. ABV is 9.8%. 50 IBU. Cloudy brown colour, low beige head of poor retention. Sweetish malty aroma, notes of caramel and oak, hints of dark dried fruits and alcohol. Not as sweet flavour as I feared, malty and oaky, caramel and dried figs, well balanced with the hops, a nice bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. Would buy again.

280 ml, on tap at the ICBF, Dublin 09/14. Poured in a session glass a clear and amber-copper coloured O A with a short one finger fine and beige foamy head that had a long retention and tons of micro bubbles. Low carbonation. Great lacing. The aroma is fruity, grapes, raisins on a solid toasted malty backbone, woody and honey notes. The flavour is citrussy fruits, dried fruits, raisins, apricots, nuts, toasted malts, caramel and spicy, vanilla and a ginger touch, molasses. The mouthfeel is fulled, syrupy and very smooth. The texture is oily. This full bodied O A has a lingering fruity finish. The alcohol is completely hidden during all the tasting and at the end, a nice warming feeling is emerging. Great and an unexpected outstanding experience

Pours a light- carbonation top. Light orange in color, a little oak aroma. An explosion of flavors upon tasting.I pick up a leathery taste and perhaps some berry notes. Then it boomerangs with a sharp dry bitterness. The alcohol seems to be well hidden, enveloped by all those good flavors.A well made Old Ale.
