SINGLE ORIGIN HOPS + SINGLE ORIGIN BEANS = JAVA THE HOP Mornings are for coffee. Evenings are for beer. Java the Hop is timeless. Don’t let that glowing orange hue fool you. As you raise this pint to the nose there is absolutely no doubt what you are getting – a coffee IPA. Packed with the flavor of Coava Coffee Roaster’s Kochere, and a taste of chocolate, Java the Hop satisfies to the finish. ABOUT THE JAVA Kochere is the name of a co-op located in the village of Chalalacktu within the Borena Zone of Southern Oromia. The people of Chalalacktu take great pride in their coffee and carefully reinvest the income they make from it into their community. The heirloom varietals that naturally grow in the area have become so highly sought after that 30% of all exported Yirga Cheffe style coffee comes from here. To ensure balance and cleanliness in the final cup, the cooperative extended their normal sorting process by three times. Sweet tea, bergamot, and jam noteskeep us coming back to Kochere as the standard for what an Ethiopian Natural Process coffee can be. Producer: Kochere Cooperative Location: Chalalacktu, Ethiopia Varietal: Heirloom Altitude: 1850 – 2000 Meters ABOUT THE HOP Amarillo hops are exclusively grown by Virgil Gamache Farms (VGF). This variety of aromatic hop was discovered in 1997 on one of VGF’s fields in Washington State. The cultivar, VGXPO1, was patented and is marketed under the Amarillo® brand. Originally founded by Albert Gamache in 1913, VGF is a family farm engaged in the production of hops and grapes, and is currently run by the third generation of hop growers. A flowery orange bouquet, with hints of spicy citrus, as well as a capacity for bittering, make Amarillo hops the perfect foundation for Java The Hop. Would have been a wish lister if I hadn't just added it. FtG is solid, and this newish beer sounded really cool. Found a single at John's Market. Aroma instantly hits the nose. Big nose of 80% coffee (so nice) and 20% hops. Hazy golden ale. Hard to tell if this is fresh and the hops are supposed to take a back seat, or if it's sat. No date. Either way, pretty damn good beer. Sessionable yet contemplative (love that kinda beer)...wonderful roasted coffee flavor as well with an underpining of cirus and earthy hops. If this were slightly more balanced it would have scored even higher.
