2000 GABF Bronze Medal Winner American Wheat Ale Category. Pete Prichard's effort to support his family, he came up with the idea of using an Indian Territory recipe to brew a beverage for the coal miners to enjoy in their free time. The recipe for home brewed Choc beer apparently originated in Indian Territory and was passed from the Indians to the Italian immigrants. Pete's innovation led to trouble, however, during prohibition. He was convicted, not once but twice, for breaking the federal prohibition act. He served two full terms in federal prison. Pete had to "flatten his time," in prison parlance, when prison officials and politicians alike objected to his being paroled, based on the fact they'd never had a better cook behind the walls. Prohibition was repealed in the late nineteen fifties, but home brewed beverages were still illegal since they didn't bear the proper liquor stamps. Nevertheless, homemade Choc and wine continued to be available to regular customers at Pete's. Finally, in 1995, through tireless efforts on the part of Joe Prichard, the grandson of the founder, Pete's Place reintroduced Choc beer as part of the restaurant's tradition and a "legal" brew for customers.

I grew up in McAlester which is right next to the little town of Krebs, Oklahoma where this little brew is made. My dad went to college near krebs and actually visited the "back room" where choc was illegally served. Personally, its one of the best american wheat's ive had, great taste that stays crisp to the last luke warm drop, as if i could drink it that slowly! Great stuff!

Sampled on 10/11/2012 at GABF. This wheat beer pours a slightly hazy yellow gold color from the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, wheaty and cereal. A medium ro light bodied wheat beer. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are slightly citrusy and earthy. Decent carbonation. Crisp and clean. Light and refreshing. Decent session ale. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

A beer of the month club entry for June/July 2011. A personal bias this month, I just don't like wheat beers all that well, give me an IPA and I will be much more happy. This one is typical of most wheats, light yellow-amber, somewhat cloudy, with a meek and mild flavor and some sweetness. Most likely best consumed while suffering from heatstroke so you don't know what your drinking!

12oz beer courtesy via trade with pfoxyjohn (thanks John!)
Cracked this one open while carving up pumpkins and I honestly had no idea what kind of beer it was. Nothing on the label as a style description that I could find. So while not a true "blind" tasting, it was at the heart of it I suppose. The beer is a light yellow, semi-clear with small bubbles clinging to my glass. Small thin white head, dissipates into basically nothing...no retention at all. Light lemony/citrus aroma, stale crackers with a dusty-ness to it. Flavor had some bready sweetness to it, some hull atringency that caused a tea-like pucker kinda of flavor. Light bodied, medium carbonation. Nothing really redeeming here. -

I get the Reese's candy bar, if you read that name Reese's that's an apostrophe s. Reese-apostrophe-s, on the end of that name. That means the candy bar is his, I didn't know that! Next time you're eating a Reese's candy bar and a guy name Reese comes by and says, "Let me have that," you'd better hand it over. "I'm sorry, Reese, I didn't think I'd ever run into you! You're a fuckin' bully, man! Let me at least have a piece!" .. a boring ass beer, made for okies in up scale dives .. light amber, good foam .. . bark and mulch with some grain in the mouth .. ya.

This stuff is just plain weird. It has the appearance of expectorated tobacco juice. It sits there flat and lifeless except for a few bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. Mouthfeel is like water. The taste is OK when I can force myself to take another drink. I tried it on tap and it is no better. It brings to my mind the phrase "WTF"?

Sampled GABF 2008
I like the story about this beer, so given the chance I decided it was at least worth a try. The beer has a hazy, straw-gold color and is topped by a frothy, pale, off-white colored head. The aroma is surprisingly fruity (at least I wasn't expecting this), but has a lot of grainy notes to it (grassy-grain, pale-cracker notes) as well as some faint herbal aromatics, a touch of honey, some melon and some sweet, green apple aromas. An interesting aroma, though it is not particularly inviting. The beer has a very light body to it and there is a soft tartness to it that I was not expecting at all. The beer is quite dry with only a touch of grain sweetness. There is a soft bitterness in the finish that is actually quite noticeable given that everything else about the beer is so light. I was definitely hoping for something that was a bit less macro-oriented (aka bland). The historical story of this beer tempted me with the promise of a taste of history and character. Instead my misgivings were well founded and this comes off more like a bland, light lager competing type of beer. This of course does have more flavor than a light lager and is not bad for what it is, I was just hoping for a bit more.

Woohoo first Oklahoma beer. A cloudy yellow appearance with a white head. The pour caught me off guard because I was expecting something choc but now I know the choc is for Choctaw not chocolate. Anyway the flavor is rather malty with some citrus mainly lemons. Overall not much to this beer but ok for a hot weather session ale.

Poured quite cloudy with an ephemeral white head. Interesting rustic, spicy nose. Unexpected flavors of sweet honeydew melon and tangy-bitter spiced wheat. Much more character than your typically-anemic American Wheat, and yet properly light and refreshing. Many thanks to Brett for intoducing me to these 'other' Choc beers from Krebs. This one poured a light yellow color with no head. It had little to no aroma that I could distinguish, but it did have a slightly malty flavor which was nice and had a sweet finish.

Thanks to Brett for this one :) I thought this beer had a very pleasant mouthfeel, creamy. Poured a pleasent cloudy golden body- but as for flavor, it didn't satisfy my buds. It had a mild grainy taste throughout the beer.
