Goose Island Bourbon County Stout it is not, but than again, what beer is? That said, this is not a bad bourbon stout. I do find it a little thin and not as smooth as it could be. However, it's not overly sweet or cloying and I found mine at a gas station in Kentucky next to my hotel, so it must not be impossible to sample with some regularity.

via Thomassova. Cristened the new house with this brew. Looks good on the pour. The aroma and flavor is significantly different than most barreled stouts i've had. Not a good thing really, but not bad either. Less booze, vanilla, and bourbon. More chocolatey, smoke, and a hint of tang which I though took away from an otherwise excelent brew. The luscious, smooth feel was the beers strong point.

I have had many bourbon barrel beers and this is not as good as most. It seems like a very subdued stout trying to hide in the bourbon and oak, its just too thin to make a presence and left me thinking the barrel could have been used for better things, like whiskey maybe.

Mmmmmm. Bourbon. Been letting this little Southern bastard age just a bit. Ruby black pour. Tall sustained tan head. Huge arches of lacing throughout. BOURBON aroma, oaken vanilla, woodsy, some roasted malts and molasses, but mostly beautiful Kentucky Bourbon. Taste is also Bourbon forward, warming, cozy, Gentlemanly, then woodsy oak and slight vanilla, some toasted malts.... then more of the delicious Bourbon. Thank you to my sister state of Kentucky for the wonderful elixir that is so damn tasty and makes some of these stouts even that much better. This one is a masterpiece. I will sip this lovely concoction for an extended amount of time... like a lazy Sunday afternoon in Dixie... Oh so relaxing and welcome.

The beer poured a very dark brownish/black color, with a light tan head that was of nice size and was creamy and smooth looking. Some beautiful lacing was left on the glass as I sipped. The head retention was good as it settled to a film on top. The aroma was of a smoked variety with some "peat" notes backing it up. Some coffee notes, but they are hidden a bit by the smoke. Some chocolate comes through, but it's mild also and smells more like a dried cocoa powder. I didn't really get any hints of Bourbon. The taste provided more of the smokey flavor, which I liked, however once again, I didn't receive any Bourbon flavoring. The coffee notes were mild and the chocholate was hidden in the background. No alcohol was present, which surprised me considering the high ABV. Not very well balanced. The mouthfeel was medium and mostly dry. It was smooth, but not as creamy as I thought it might be. No real alcohol warmth. The flavor did not stick around on the palate as much as I had hoped either. I thought the mouthfeel was a little lax considering the style. Well, this beer looked really good in the glass. I loved the smokey aspects, although I was expecting and hoping for a bit more of the Bourbon aroma and flavoring. Oh well. It was still a rather enjoyable and easy drink. Went down very easy considering the high ABV. Not horrible, but kind of misleading. I would have another though. Maybe two. I thought this would be a "sipper", but I found myself taking big gulps.
