I had one at lunch 12/22/08, Bells makes some of my favorite beers,. and this was a new one for Me. I've had the winter wheat and rate it average. So My expectations may have been low, I was pleasantly surprised by a very good Ale.

Comes out of the bottle clear and coppery with a thick and persistent off-white head. Aroma is malty and slightly fruity and spicy. Malty flavor has spicy undertone, mainly cloves and cinnamon and a fruity touch. Texture is strongly tingly and fairly smooth.

Deep amber brown color, tight creamy head, some lacing. Rich sweet malty aroma and flavor upfront, with some biscuit and caramel, some fruits and very slight orange peel, light earthy hops, more malts. Nice change of pace from the hop bomb world.

pours a burnt orange with some cloudiness with a nice creamy head. The aroma consists of orange, citron, pine and malt. The taste is full but dry malt balanced with hops bitterness and some dry hop fruit. Lots of subtle esthers carry on to make the taste last. The mouthfeel is light but creamy and is drinkable brew.

A cystalline amber colored beer with a moderate foamy textured, light beige colored head. There;s some hang time. Settles into a thin ringlet. Sweet fruit and light cloves in the nose. Citric addition to that nose profile. Light, effervescent body. Interesting.

A really light type of beer, not sure what I was expecting. Aroma is of candy sweetness, some hops and spice, not bad. Flavor is also light, mostly malty, again some spice. A very fizzy beer as well. It's no SN Celebration but it'll do.

Slowly poured into a small goblet producing a foamy tan head that soon settles on top of a crystal clear deep amber body. Light bodied with a succinct finish, malt forward and soft on the palate. Mildly floral with a hint of hop spiciness. Sweet and nutty malts with a waft of perfume. The more I sip on this the more I dig it. Nothing over the top, purely a malt driven session style winter offering.

A reddish/burnt orange/copper color with a very large soapy off white head that stayed around for a bit and has sufficient lacing. The beer is mostly clear with several bubbles rising. The head settled to a nice film on top. Faint bit of an earthy malt tone. Some ginger bread aromas. Detecting some nuttiness. Maybe almond. The aromas seem more laid back than I had anticipated. The taste provided the ginger again along with some nutmeg spices I thought. A touch of a custard taste. Medium/thin mouthfeel. Mostly smooth and mostly dry. Left suitable flavor on the palate. Would like to have had a fuller mouthfeel with this Christmas themed brew. This beer is alright. Wouldn't be my first choice for a Winter/Christmas brew, but ok none the less. It's easily drinkable with tame aromas and flavor. I would drink it again if it was offered.

my bottle has the above brewer's description minus the "scotch" before ale. no hint of peat malt here. a nice, full bodied and flavored chestnut ale...lots of roasted malt, vanilla, caramel, and a touch of hops to balance. a very solid no frills holiday brew. thanks John for another tasty brew.

Sampled on 2/20/2010. This scotch ale pours a medium to dark copper color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is floral hops, bready and spicy. A medium bodied scotch ale. The malts are fruity, caramel and sweet. The hops are floral and grapefruity. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Nice malts, very drinkable. Not a traditional “X-Mas” beer, but a very nice sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Pours a darkish copper with ample off-white head. The description on the bottle is a bit vague so the aroma and taste caught me by surprise. A very tasty winter seasonal for sure--aroma is mildly fruity to go with the strong malt and caramel base. Taste of berries, just a bit of spice, and bready malt.
