Rauchstack is a smooth, full-bodied smoked ale.The distinctive smoked character, courtesy of wood-fire kilned malts in the recipe, is balanced by rich, malty sweetness. Our friend Thomas at Weyermann Malts in Bamberg, Germany custom-designed the malt profile for this recipe (over breakfast no less!), and we brewed it in tribute to our close ties with them. History & Style Rauchbier is a beer style originating in the region of Franconia in Germany. The unique feature of this style is that the malt has been kilned over wood fire (typically beechwood). As a result of this process the malt imparts a pungent smoky character to the beer. Tasting Notes The first impression of Rauchstack is undoubtedly its rich, smoky aroma. The body is luscious and the flavour echoes the smoky scent, giving the sense of a beer that could almost be a meal. The smoke is balanced by malty sweetness. The finish is clean, with some lingering whiffs of smoke. Food Pairings Rauchstack is a perfect accompaniment to virtually all smoked foods. Try it with bacon, ham, smoked salmon or smoked cheeses.

Part of their Oktoberfest 2014 mixed pack. Pours a deep red-orange colour with a big frothy light-beige head that lasts a long time and gives out creamy-foam lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, dark fruits, burnt wood and even tamari notes. The taste is balanced between some sweetness and some bitterness. The smokiness is hardly there. Sweetness from the fruitiness and some decent hop. Very mild burnt malt lingers in the end. A pretty good beer overall, but wish it was a little more smokey to be a Rauchbier.

Pours a large amount of frothy brownish head and has a murky dark brown appearance. Lacing is pretty good. Aromas of toffee, roasted malts, and spice and resin hops. Flavours are somewhat Smokey, some roasted malts, mild spices, hops are of the more bitter variety. Slick and somewhat oily mouthfeel. Goes down fairly easy. Pretty good.

The beer pours a very dark red brown with a 1" tan coloured head that is creamy and lasts a while. The aroma is smoked wood, caramel, dark fruits and floral hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly creamy, with average carbonation. The flavour is smoked wood, sweet malt, a slight fruit note, and some roasted character.
