Very dark pour. Definite aroma and even more obvious flavor of brandy and perhaps a couple other barrels (rum and bourbon) but our server was of no help - so I'm not adding another version as I'm not privy to the specifics. This barleywine 3 year blend was the best of the night though. All kinds of dark fruit, roast and boozy complexity.

NorCal tasting Feb 07 - This was a very tasty barleywine and something I can work with after a couple disasters from Ballast Point. A sweet, sweet nose with caramel being the biggest aroma. Underneath the carmael was a little brown sugar, some earth and even a little hops. Appearance was beautifully clear, with a maple syrup/deep dark golden color with a minimal head. Mouthfeel was a little on the thin side, but nothing major. Flavors were caramel, toffee, dark fruits. Everything was really nicely balanced.

02.19.05 Tap at Toronado BWF Deep garnet color with little head, but this sample sat on the table for a while before I got to it. Lots of molasses and brown sugar, dried figs, citrus pithiness, alcohol on nose. Flavors are sweet and malt heavy up front, a bit of nutmeg and a punch of clove. Money balance. I dig this stuff. Finish loses luster as it fades to a more light and hoppy IIPA, missing some lingering malt stickiness.

This is a very special and extremely limited blending of three different years' worth of barleywine. I have to think this project must have been going on for a quite a while, so I don't think I've had any Baleywines from Ballast Point the past few years -- then, all of a sudden, here they come with a ultra-premium blending of several years' worth of batches. Interesting...! Maybe Stone is not the only San Diego brewery with a few tricks up their collective sleeves, eh?
Without a doubt one of the best Barleywines I've had (so far). I have a bottle of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot `99 calling my name, but until I sucumb to that big beer, the Three Sheets was damn-near perfect, IMHO. Big in all aspects, but with a great balance, making this 10%ABV beer way-too easy to drink! Hoppier than most Barleywines, but not so much so that you start thinking that this is some sort of upstart Double/"Imperial" IPA. No, this is a world-class Barleywine through-and-through, and unapolgetic in it's boldness and yet mellowness. Me likey. Alot!

on tap at the "Twisted Stick", one of iceman’s favorite dive bars. Had this one for his going away party. This is a very easy to drink barleywine, Malty & sweet up front, but not too heavy, it was slightly tangy on the finish. Very nice.

This barley wine pours with a deep reddish-brown body topped by a thick head with lots of lacing. Slighlty sweet and malty with nice fruity notes, some caramel and a nice hoppy bitterness. Full bodied, smooth and a touch dry.

Looks like maple syrup to me. Hints of burnt sugar and cake frosting in the head, the burnt candy thing makes up the body with some of that jager smoothly blended in there.
