A classic Scotch Ale. Scotch ales are typically sweet and malty, with a very subdued dose of hops– just enough to provide balance. AleSmith Wee Heavy is a wonderful interpretation of this traditional Scotch style.

Poured a dark redish brown color with a medium head. Sweet malty aroma with the alcohol present in the aroma. This one knocked me off my feet with the flavor of sweet malt and alcohol but the alcohol was not overpowering. Very Full mouthfeel with medium carbonation. My first scotch ale and I Like it!! I will definitely be trying more examples of this style.

Pours opaque coffee brown with light tan head. Roast malt aroma has molasses overtone. Flavor has molasses, licorice and roast malt notes, a bit on the sweet side. Firm texture has OK fizz and leaves a chocolaty finish.

750 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with a big creamy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is sweet smokey peat malts.

The flavor is sweet caramel and toffee malts with a little dark fruit and some smokey peat in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with light carbonation.

Overall, nice scotch ale - a little too sweet.

By far the best wee heavy I have ever had outside of pfoxyjohn's Wallace Wee Heavy. The nose is slightly smokey, with boozy notes and maybe some soy. A big, big beer that hides it well with all of the balancing of the flavors. The peated malts are heavier than other examples and I think for me that is what really made this great.

Extremely well crafted from all angles. Amber brown body with a lasting 1/2" tan head and a heavy coat of lacing that blankets the glass. Medium to heavy bodied, luscious, rich and silky. An abundance of sweet malts providing notes of bran cereal, raisins, burnt toast, dark fruits/berries and an ever so slight peaty earthiness. I had no issue sipping on the entire bottle throughout a couple hours, and it peaked my interest the entire time.

750 ml bottle, kindly shared by abemorsten. ABV is 10%. Very dark ruby colour, nearly black. Low beige head. Aroma of malts, dark dried fruits / prunes and caramel, maybe a hint of smoke. Very rich and malty flavour, again with caramel and prunes, and maybe a hint of smoke. Powerful stuff.

Bottled (thanks stoutlover72). Dark ambery brown colour with mediumsized beigeish brown head. Quite big maltyness along with some toffee and alcohol. Quite strong on the chocolate and nuttynesss as well. Flavour is quite much the same in a very fullbodied way. The alcohol is a bit too strong even though this has been kept since I got it in 2006.

Dark brown body with a thin tan cap but given the 10% that’s ok. Roasted malts, molasses, hints of soya sauce, burnt sugar and I even hit some coconut but that doesn’t seem correct. Taste is much the same with burnt sugar heavy dark malts, hints of peat, plum, mild soya. I also get burnt marsh mellow. Very tasty, complex, and high quality. The 10% was completely hidden.

A very good interpretation of the Scotch Ale style but falls short of the Scottish versions I've tried. A very dark pour, with a thin ring for a head. The aroma is roasted malt, with a lot of coffee and chocolate. The flavour is more of the same. Where is the molasses flavour that Scotch Ales in Scotland are noted for?

Acquired in a trade, served this in a snifter. Pours dark brown, almost black with a large, thick, coffee-colored, two-finger head which settled only to a half-finger. Nose is is some dark fruit (figs, plums)brown sugar and a heavy dose of scotch or brandy. Taste is sweet- brown sugar, toffee, caramel, dark fruits - a little roasted coffee, peat and a liberal dose of scotch/brandy and accompanying warming. There is a nice bitterness in the end to ameliorate all that sweetness up front. Mouthfeel is fairly heavy with a decent amount of carbonation. Watch out ‘cause you certainly aren’t aware of the ABV. This is a very nice offering, although Alesmith seems to seldom miss. They certainly didn’t with this one.

This is the second AleSmith offering that I've now had the pleasure of sampling and it did not disappoint. Big, bold, smooth and just sweet enough. Great on a cold night. Huge, thick head lingered and produced phenomenal lacing. Deep, dark color was beautiful to behold in my British pub glass. The intensely complex flavors of caramel, chocolate and smoke make it more of a overall sensory experience. Highly worthy!
