Beer Description:
Back in early 2000, I was brewing commercially in the Atlanta, Georgia area. I attended Georgia Craft Brewers Guild meetings while I was there, which is where I met John Roberts of Max Lager's for the first time. He usually led the meetings and was always dabbling in one thing "beer" or another. During my stint in Georgia, John and I were always competitive. In retrospect, I realize how much I respect him and the quality of his beers. So I asked him if he wanted to design a beer together. It is contained inside the vessel that you are holding. Collaborating with John was effortless, as most of the time we were completing each other's ideas. We decided to make an American Black Lager. The beer is made with some unique grains and hops. We used Bohemian floor-malted dark malt, dark Munich and chocolate wheat to name a few. Mt. Rainier, Pacific Gem and Brewers Gold maintain the hop flavor of the beer, lending dark fruit and black licorice notes. As an added layer, we decided to age the beer on a nontraditional wood called black ash. The wood adds light smoky notes to the plethora of aromas and flavors. This beer is unique in that it features smoky characteristics despite the fact that we didn't use anything smoked in the brewing process. Prepare to venture to the dark side with this hoppy, mocha lager.
