Our Stone 11.11.11 Vertical Epic Ale proved to be an eccentric diversion from our previous lineup of innovative Belgian-inspired brews. And considering we’re Stone, that’s really saying something. This unprecedented beer was brewed with cinnamon sticks and Anaheim green chilies, giving it an amazing flavor profile unlike anything that came before it. It certainly didn’t need any enhancement, but we just don’t know when to leave well enough alone (and we’ve demonstrated before that you can, indeed, improve upon perfection). So we decided to tinker with it a bit and laid a small portion to rest in wine barrels. Not wanting to limit our experiment to only red or white wine barrels, we choose both. Treat yourself to a bottle of each and compare. All in the name of science, of course...

Rated in Feb. 2013. Big thanks to Sparky for sharing this. It pours hazy copper with a gold edges and a thin light tan head. The aroma has spicy white oak, mild red wine notes and then faint coriander and clove and just a dash of anise like spiciness. The taste has an odd mix of malt sweetness and dry red wine that has a Sangria wine sort of sensation. In the background are mild spiciness noted in the nose. Very interesting mix of flavors that work pretty well for me.

Not an improvement over the far cheaper base beer, so definitely a one timer for me. I did enjoy it, though. Stone red wine barrels seem to have a very distinct fruity character that was an interesting choice for this copper colored pepper and cinnoman belgian. the flavors that would seem to clash worked together well, but for that price something needs to knock your socks off.
