---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Löwenbräu Original / Lowenbrau Original | Germany | Helles / Dortmunder | 3.5
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 8 It's hard to believe that I haven't rated this beer before. An issue I have with ths is that in Canada. Lowenbrau has been brewed by several different entities over the years. In the 70s and 80s it was brewed in Canada by Carling O'Keefe. Then it shifted to being imported for a few years, and now the cans in Canada are brewed by Labatt. Either way, I've had the German original, and they all taste pretty much the same. It's a well balanced Americanized German helles where you can detect the malted grains as equally as the Central European hops. It gets lifted by the Enjoyment scores, but isn't that part of the experience....enjoying the actual beer! |

2 | Woodhouse Lager | Canada | Vienna / Amber Lager | 2.7
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5 Wow, an Ontario brewer that mislabels their cans....what a concept. The can says 'lager' which could be anything bottom fermented I suppose. It's a copper colour with a long lasting off-white head. Aroma doesn't match what I see as I would expect caramel or light toast but it's cereal, yeast, and light hops. The flavour is the same as the aroma with little to no caramel or roast making me wonder where the colour comes from. |

3 | Woodhouse India Pale Ale | Canada | IPA | 3.5
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 Having been to the brewery a couple of times and been very disappointed in their stuff, I was kind of surprised that this was quite good. It's a dark gold pour, some haze, maybe even a floaty or two. I smell a lot of elements in this such as cereal, orange rind, and papaya. The flavours meld together nicely making this a nice drinking beer. |

4 | Woodhouse Hibiscus Raspberry Sour | Canada | Wild Ale | 1.7
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3 Had this at the brewery, and I didn't have the heart to tell them how bad it is because the owner couldn't stop raving about it. It's an overcarbonated mess. Cherry red in colour, head is fleeting, notes of tart raspberries and yeast weak at best. Very watery, and flavour is minimal, but puckering. |

5 | Heineken Buckler | Netherlands | Reduced Alcohol | 1.9
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3 I've known about Buckler beer for decades, they used to sponsor a team on the World Cycling Tour in the 1980s. Jelle Nijdam won a TdF prologue while racing for Buckler. It is a very clear gold, and the head starts out large but quickly disappears. Aroma is typical of the pale lager style, but the flavour is severely lacking. The bottle lists hops, but none can be detected. |

6 | Heineken 0.0 | Netherlands | Reduced Alcohol | 2.5
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4 I wonder why Heieneken needs both Buckler and 0.0 as low alcohol beers? Another clear gold pour, head is white, and vanishes into thin air. Aroma is very similar to Heineken, maybe even better because there are no icky adjunct aromas in this one. Flavour is that of a watered down golden lager. |

7 | Cowbell Brewing Pomegranate Honeysuckle Fruit Sour | Canada | Wild Ale | 3.2
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7 The beer pours a dark murky golden pink colour that will remind you of grapefruit juice, or at least it did with me. Aromatically, they have hidden the honeysuckle quite well, but the pomegranate and cherry notes jump out. The flavour is all about the fruit though. The grainy malt notes and the yeasty notes are all overwhelmed by the fruit. So....not a bad beer at all. |

8 | Whitewater Brewing KLR 93 | Canada | Kölsch | 3.0
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6 Named after Doug Gilmour, an NHL Hall of Famer who shouldn’t be, but that story is for another time. This is a kolsch. Not my favourite style. This is a very clear beer, pale yellow with a foamy white head. No head retention whatsoever though. Cereal notes dominate the flavour and the aroma with a hint of floral hops to keep it somewhat interesting |

9 | Whitewater Brewing Legion Lager | Canada | Lager | 3.8
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 Craft lagers are a finicky bunch. They claim to be adjunct free, but they don’t always taste that way. This one tastes adjunct free, and is pretty good for a ‘lager’. A dark straw coloured beer with a thin white foamy head greets the eyes while the nostrils are tempted with notes of light floral hops and cereal malts. The tongue is greeted with hints of cereal, and spicy hops. Well done. |

10 | Wellington Digger's Wit | Canada | Witbier | 3.6
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7 In a lot of ways, Witbiers are so yesterday, but at the same time, a good witbier can be quite refreshing. This beer pours a very hazy light yellow colour with a thin white head. Aroma is quite spicy with notes of wheat and yeast. Far more spicy than a Hoegaarden. A lot of yeast and spice in the flavour. Not refreshing, but is tasty. |

11 | Wellington Helles Lager | Canada | Helles / Dortmunder | 3.3
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 A new beer in the Wellington lineup, German style lagers are always welcome in my book. This beer pours a shiny light gold colour with a little haze, and a foamy white head. Not a lot of head retention though. Nice grainy malt aromas and herbal hops. Typical of the style. This is not a well balanced beer though, more malt forward than a true German Helles. |

12 | Wellington Upside IPA | Canada | IPA | 3.7
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 Juicy IPAs are the latest in the IPA canon of beers, replacing the prior fads of Session, Black, and American. A reddish gold body, some haze, and a weak off-white head make up the appearance. The nose senses grass and fruit right off the start, and upon closer examination, there is yeast. Flavour is very citrusy, not like a breakfast juice, but certainly juicier than most traditional west coast IPAs |

13 | St. Louis Gueuze Fond Tradition | Belgium | Gueuze | 3.8
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 Purchased at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario Store. A cloudy golden coloured beer with nary a head. The aroma is tart fruit, funk, yeast, and grains. The flavour is more of the same with very tart fruity notes of front and a yeasty finish. |

14 | Toppling Goliath pseudoSue Pale Ale | United States | American Pale Ale | 4.0
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9 My name is Sue……how do you do? Oh wait, this isn’t Sue, this is Fake Sue! Fortunately, this beer is anything but fake. The beer is nothing special to look at, being a cloudy golden pour topped by a foamy white cap. It’s in the aroma and the flavour that this beer separates from the pack with a huge citrus and pine punch and just enough grain to keep it balanced. |

15 | St. Louis Gueuze Lambic | Belgium | Gueuze | 3.6
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 Purchased at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario Store. Pours a pale gold colour with definte haze and a snow white bubbly head that is gone within seconds. The aroma is tart fruit, yeast, grains, and sour funk. The flavour is very tart fruit with hints of grains and yeast in the mix. |

16 | Pilsner Urquell | Czech Republic | Bohemian / Czech Pilsener | 3.3
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 7 The great grandfather of all of today’s Czech Pilseners, be they good or bad. I guess one can be a bit sentimental and rate this one high, and if you get it in a can that would be worthy. Or you can be fair and rate it for what it is, a decent lager that is a few steps above a macro but still a few steps below a well crafted pilsner. A pale straw pour that is topped by a foamy white head. Aroma is balanced between floral hops and grass. Flavour is rather one dimensional with grains up front and hops in the finish. |

17 | Miller High Life | United States | Pale Lager | 1.6
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 3 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3 There isn’t a whole lot to say about this beer, and what little there is, is not in favour of the beer. What does it look like? It looks like water with a hint of yellow food colouring. What does it smell like? It smells like barley, corn, and stomach acid. What does it taste like? Wretched is the word, it tastes wretched. |

18 | Lake Of Bays Nightwatcher | Canada | Oatmeal Stout | 2.8
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5 English and Irish style stouts have been a part of the Canadian brewing scene longer than Canada’s been a country, and it’s almost mandatory that all new craft brewers in the country make either a dry stout or an oatmeal stout. This isn’t in the list of better ones. It starts off a nice dark coca-cola colour but after that, everything falls short. It’s a thin stout with very bland roasted malt notes and even weaker cocoa notes. |

19 | Kasteel Bruin | Belgium | Belgian Strong Ale | 4.2
Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9 Purchased at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario Store. The beer pours a solid dark brown colour with red edges, and a light tan coloured cap. The aroma is roasted malt, dark fruits, weak caramel, and yeast. The flavour mirrors the aroma with the dark fruit and roasted malt evident up front and a bitter yeasty finish. Quite enjoyable. |

20 | Highlander Beerded Lady | Canada | American Pale Ale | 2.7
Aroma: 5 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5 Coming in at 4.1%, this is a weak APA in both design and flavour. A light rust colour, slightly hazed with a thin snow white ring for a head. Weak caramel and weak citrus notes in the aroma represent the malt and hops. The other notes in the aroma are very acidic and metallic in nature. Flavour is weak and watered down. Shouldn’t have expected better considering the brewer. |

21 | Heineken Lager | Netherlands | Pale Lager | 2.0
Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 4 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 4 | Overall: 4 I have acquaintances who measure how good a bar is based on whether or not you can get a Heineken. If you can – it’s a go to bar. If you can’t, then it is to be avoided at all costs. Heineken to me is a bad beer. A pale golden beer with a soft white cap that smells like old grains and skunks. It tastes like stale grains and bathwater. Surprisingly, there are worse beers out there. |

22 | Half Acre Daisy Cutter Pale Ale | United States | American Pale Ale | 3.4
Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7 The flagship beer for the Half Acre brewery. Quite clear for a pale ale, medium gold in colour with some rocky islands for a head. Lots of citrusy hops and pine in the aroma with a hint of caramel and bread. Well balanced flavours with the caramel leading into a piney hop finish. |

23 | Charlevoix Dominus Vobiscum Double | Canada | Abbey Dubbel | 4.1
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 A brewery that comes with a great reputation and it should be no surprise that this was a great beer. A dark brown beer, the cap is creamy, brown, and lasts a while. The dominant aromatic is yeast, but there are also hints of dark fruit, plenty of seasonal spices, and molasses. The beer starts out sweet with the fruit and molasses notes, but the finish is mildly bitter. There are notes of yeast. An excellent beer. |

24 | Frank Brewing Simple Man Oatmeal Stout | Canada | Oatmeal Stout | 2.7
Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5 I was not too excited to try this beer because when I heard the name Frank because my first thought was Frank D’Angelo. Fortunately he’s not behind the brewery. Unfortunately the beer isn’t all that good. It’s nice and dark, but the aroma and flavour is a hot mess. Too much roasted malt, and not enough of anything else. |

25 | Carlow Molings Traditional Red Ale / O'Hara's Irish Red | Ireland | Irish Ale | 3.8
Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8 A world renowned ale that has the unfortunate reputation of being ‘just another Irish Stout’ in a country that produces Guinness. Personally, this is a very good stout. A dark mahogany colour with a creamy light brown head. No cascading effervescence here. Both the aroma and taste are roasted malts with light touches of coffee and dark chocolate |
