1 Banks Beer Barbados Pale Lager 2.4

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 5 | Mouthfeel: 5 | Flavor: 5 | Overall: 5

I look at the scores and I didn't think this beer was as bad as others. It certainly outranks Corona in my books. A typical pale lager with a pale golden colour, white foamy cap, aroma of grass and weak hops, and the flavour is very grainy. I did not notice any adjuncts here, just a watered down lager.

2 Biere du Boucanier Blonde Ale Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.1

Aroma: 6 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A very strong beer and the alcohol is noticeable in both the aroma and the flavour. A clouded medium gold pour with a weak white cap. The aroma is dominated by malt and yeast with the alcohol overpowering the spices and yeast. Flavour is grains and alcohol with the yeast and spices secondary.

Purchased at Liquor Control Board of Ontario store. Part of a holiday 6 pack. This pours a medium brown colour with red hues and a dark tan head. Toffee, yeast, and figs tingle the aromatic sense. Flavour has notes of nutty malt, caramel, yeast, and spices. The best of the 6 pack.

5 Augustijn Grand Cru Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Purchased at Liquor Control Board of Ontario store. Part of a holiday 6 pack. A beast of a beer. It pours a hazed golden-orange with a huge white head. Spices, yeast, and citrus dominate the aroma, but notes of candied fruit exist. The flavour starts out with a fruity sweetness, and has a bitter citrus finish with yeast and spice notes. Alcohol was detectable.

8 Achel Extra Bruin (de drie wijzen) Belgium Abbey Quadrupel 5.0

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

Tried at a bar. This beer literally blew my mind with how great it was. It poured a reddish-brown with a tan coloured cap that lasted. Dark fruits, caramel, and licorice were the primary aromatic notes with yeast and roasted malt present. The flavour was well balanced with notes of fig, raisins and toffee up front, and yeast and spices in the finish.

9 Achel Blond 8 Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Purchased at Liquor Control Board of Ontario store. Is this a tripel, or a blonde BSA, who knows? It pours a clouded medium gold colour with a rocky white head. The aroma is spice, yeast, citrus, and grains. The flavour is dominated by the grains and the citrus, but the yeast is ever present in the background.

10 Abbaye des Rocs Grand Cru Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.9

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

Purchased at Liquor Control Board of Ontario store. This is just an excellent beer. A nice dark brown pour with a generous foaming brown head. Lots of dark fruit and roastiness in the aroma with ample notes of caramel and yeast. Everything comes out in the taste though, with jthe dark fruits band caramel dominating.

11 Achel Bruin 8 Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.1

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

A recent find at the Ontario Liquor monopoly. It pours a deep brown colour with hits of red. The head is light brown, frothy, and lasts a while. There is caramel, brown sugar, yeast, and bread in the aroma. The flavour is a tad sweet with hints of caramel, roasted malt, and yeast.

12 Abbaye des Rocs La Montagnarde (Ambree) Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.2

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 6 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6

A recent find at Ontario liquor stores, and certainly not in the same class as the brune. It pours a hazed light rust colour with a generous beige cap. Lots of yeast in the aroma with hints of fruit and spices. Flavour is similar with the grain and yeast dominating, and the fruit tones in the background. Would not buy again.

13 Abbaye des Rocs Brune Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.6

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 10 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Had this gem the other day, and it was mighty fine despite it being a warm summer day. A mahogany coloured elixer with a fruity bouquet that includes raisins, plums, some roastiness, and yeast. Alcohol is well hidden, and the flavour is balanced between hoppy bitterness, and the sweet caramel and fruit notes. A bit pricy at $4/bottle, but a damn good beer.

14 Abbaye des Rocs Triple Imperiale Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 4.8

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 10 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 10 | Overall: 10

Tried at a bar. This looks, feels, and tastes like an enhanced version of the brune, and that’s not a bad thing. It pours a deep dark brown with red edges and a light brown cap. Plums and raisins dominate the nose with yeast, roasted malt, and caramel in the mix. Flavour is sweet up front with notes of fruit and malt with a bitter finish and a mild yeastiness.

15 Barbar Belgian Honey Ale / Barbar Blonde Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

Not sure if this contains actual honey or not. It pours a deep gold colour with a thin white cap. The aroma is quite grainly with notes of spices, especially coriander and pepper. There is no noticeable alcohol in the nose or palate despite the 8% ABV. Flavour is noticeable spice with grain notes and a touch of malty sweetness.

16 Barbar Winter Bok Belgium Bock 4.1

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

One can never go wrong with a dark beer.,…right? This beer pours with a dark brown pour with a light brown cap that sticks around. There is some roasted malt in the nose with hints of caramel, yeast, and spices. The flavour is as complex as the aroma with notes of coffee, caramel, yeast, and honey. I could drink a lot of this if it wasn’t 8.5%

17 Berthold Keller Premium Lager Belgium Lager 1.7

Aroma: 4 | Appearance: 3 | Mouthfeel: 4 | Flavor: 3 | Overall: 3

I can say, without hesitation, that this beer was pure shit! Not sure what I was expecting from a Belgian lager. The beer pours a very pale yellow-gold with a huge white cap that disappears faster than a cockroach in the light. Lots of sour grains in the aroma with a weak hoppish note. Not a lot of good flavours in this, lots of acidic and metallic notes that make this a drain pour.

18 Blanche de Bruxelles Manneken Pis Belgium Witbier 3.6

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

A nice witbier for the masses like a Hoegaarden. It pours a nice hazed yellow with a snow wite head. The aroma is typical witbier with notes of yeast and spices. The flavour is sweet wheat with hints of coriander and citrus. I would buy again.

19 LeFebvre Hopus Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.7

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 7

A recent find at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario branch store. A cloudy gold colour with a generous white cap. The aroma is mainly cereal malt, yeast, and some notes of floral hops. The flavour is grainly with hints of yeast, citrus, and spices. Not as hoppy as the name would indicate, but a pretty good beer nonetheless.

20 Biere du Boucanier Dark Ale Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.4

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

A rust coloured beer that is still dominated by the alcohol. There is almost no head. The aroma is dominated by yeast and caramel scents with cereal malts and alcohol in the mix. The flavour has a sweet tang to it with noticeable alcohol presence and yeast and caramel flavours as well

21 Biere du Boucanier Red Ale Belgium Belgian Strong Ale 3.8

Aroma: 7 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

Part of an annual Christmas pack available at the LCBO. This pours a slightly less red than the Dark, although the head tends to be larger. The aroma is slightly fruity with notes of ropasted malt, caramel, and yeast. RThe flavour is like the aroma, with a very bitter long lasting aftertaste.

22 Bockor Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge Belgium Flanders Red 4.2

Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 9 | Flavor: 8 | Overall: 8

The flagship beer of the Vander Ghinste brewery and it’s easy to see why. This is a superb example of a Flanders Red. A sparkly effervescent cherry red pour with a pinkish cap. Aroma is tart cherries, funk, and vinegar. Flavour is pretty much the same although the balance between the cherry sweetness and tartness is remarkably well done.

23 Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel Belgium Abbey Tripel 4.4

Aroma: 10 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 7 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Part of the 2013 LCBO Summer Release. A huge frothy white head sits atop a cloudy golden pour of beer with lots of floaties. Looks good. Yeast, citrus, and spices dominate the aroma with the herbal hop notes more of an afterthought. The flavour is undeniably tripel-like with yeast and spices coming out on top. Great beer.

24 Bockor Bellegems Bruin Belgium Flanders Oude Bruin 3.5

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 7 | Overall: 7

A hazy light brown with red edges, and a thick bubbly off-white head. Lots of dark fruit, some tartness, yeast, and wooden notes make comprise the aroma. The flavour is a mish-mash between the sweet fruit notes and the tart cherry-like flavours with plenty of funk in the mix.

25 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze (Armand & Tommy) Belgium Gueuze 4.0

Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 9 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 6

A recent one off available in Ontario for a whopping $22.80 a bottle. Thankfully a friend of mine spent the money and decided to split it with me. It pours darker than a lot gueuzes, a cloudy light brown colour to be exact. Head is white, and larger than expected. Funk is the name of the game in the aromatic department, wood chips, more funk. Flavour is funky lemons with a definite puckering moment. It smells like a great gueuze, it tastes like a great gueuze, but it's well overpriced, even if it a rare one off.
